Wife and I have cards that were both upgraded to World Elite status. We were both just approved for the Platinum card which should give us another 100k miles for a total of $6k spend. Will let you all know how it pans out but as txtiger stated the results are positive on Flyertalk. Might be churning these.

Now your wait begins for the letter with the bonus language. Hope it works as anticipated!

Question for those of you that book AA/oneworld rewards. Is it pretty common for seats to get opened up as the date nears? Looking for a return from Europe at the end of Spring Break in about 6 weeks. Wife just suggested going to Spain for spring break and I can't find anything back into IAH (because it's spring break...). Already booked the outbound on UA/LH.

Flying business class to Europe gives ridiculous value for 50000 AA Saver miles.

Just booked June for 2 of us for 50k each from HNL to SAN to PHL to FCO. First class from HNL to SAN to PHL and then Biz to FCO. 100k AA miles and $11.20

Booked United on the way back from Amsterdam to HNL for 35k each, 70k total in economy + $160 in fees. We'll just book our flights to and fro Latvia on some Euro company.

I did find a Korean Air flight from AMS to Korea then to HNL for 82k TY points. I have 77k so it was another $130 which is fine but the wife's flight would cost $1,100. So far we're only out $175 and miles doing the AA and UA mileage.

What did you do to get them upgraded? My wife got hers upgraded shortly after she got it and mine hasn't. I've had mine since 2009. WTF?

Citi does the upgrade. It's not something you can request. Have you logged in to your account and checked it as txtiger said? I'm going to churn a few of these as long as they keep upgrading the cards for me.

quote:

Log into your Citi card's online account.
Select "Profile & Settings"
Select "Set Default Credit Card and Nickname"
If the card is listed as "Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World MasterCard®" it is World.
If the card is listed as "Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select®" it is World Elite.

Is yours one of the legacy Citi AA VISA's? If so, you are good to go to apply for the Mastercard version which is out now to get the bonus.

Not in my experience although I must admit that my experience in this is somewhat limited.

Also if yours has been open since 2009, you don't fall into the 18 month rule anyway, so apply away. If your card IS the MasterCard version that hasn't been upgraded, closing it may trigger the 18-mo rule so be wary of that. The nice thing about the upgrade to world elite is that it's as if the credit card literally vanishes from citi's 18-mo tracker - both the initial app and a subsequent closing.

Nice redemption by the way! Does Lufthansa not fly to from wherever you are leaving Europe from? I've always had good luck finding coach availability to ams, but you would need to connect in muc or fra so it would add two flights. And UA doesn't charge extra miles for partner coach redemptions.

AA is tweaking their award availability this year...for the good apparently. With that being said, in my experience, AA isn't great about opening up seats just because they're empty. I've checked many times the morning of a flight and see a completely empty cabin and no award seats available.

Applied for a SW business card got approved except random address verification.

Sent in stuff but they don't have record and now I have to reapply

No. AA is notorious for not opening up SAAver awards just because seats are empty in the hopes people will pay for AAnytime award. But anyway, find out what flight you're interested in and set up alerts on EF.

That sucks. This is one of the reasons I generally always call in for business apps.

Is it a much different process?

Sorry. I meant I apply online, but my business apps go to "processing" at least 50% of the time and I'll call in to check status and it usually involves answering verification questions. I'm impatient and would rather get them the needed info than get a postal letter 10 days letter requesting additional info.

What works for LSUAfro may not (in most cases - does not) work for you. YMMV.

But stick to cross your fingers and hope method unless you're honed at dealing with business credit reps, which LSUAfro clearly is

Samesies.

My AA card fee came due too but don't want to cancel as having that was "part of the deal."

Hopefully they do a partial fee refund once I get my points and cancel.

And as we were just talking about ExpertFlyer:

EF just notified me via text of an award seat opening up MXP-MIA direct on AA. Instead of routing through LHR I was able to snag that 1 seat that had opened up. Saved me $100 in taxes right away. Paid for itself for an entire year.

They waived my AF if you want to try the retention route. The only spend I put on it after initial spend was to fund the Gold account.
