So I guess what my friend just told me is we would travel down to that Island by a mixture of bus/train/ferry and not fly into it.
The most aggressive approach he said would be to Spend a night and a day in Bangkok, take the overnight train up to North thailand and stay there for 2-3 days, take the train back down to bangkok and then travel to the Island.
Don't know if that is feasible.
This is our post taking the bar trip before employment so it will be a success no matter what haha

Something about drinking red buckets of alcohol and lots of fire are involved. I think if you don't come home with an STD you may see that as a success or a failure depending on how you look at it

I literally just decided to pull the trigger on this with a friend because we both have time in August to do this.
Nice. I've been and I believe Sho Nuff actually lived in southern Thailand as well.
It really depends on what you're trying to do in Thailand. There's really a lot of ways you can go. I'd probably hop on up to Chaing Mai while you're at the airport and spend a couple days there before coming back down to BKK. You can get flights for like $30 on some of the discount carriers.
So much to do in/around BKK. A lot of it I'm not typing on my work computer .
Cabbies & Tuk Tuk drivers suck. Use Uber if/when you can or get bellboy or concierge at hotel to get you a cab. Those SOBs will bring you wherever they feel like.
It's going to be hot as hell while you're there. Keep that in mind when booking a hotel as you might want one with a pool.
Agoda is a good resource for booking hotels. Sukhumvit area if you're not trying to do the whole backpacker thing on Khao san, but I assume you are since you're doing the Half Moon party.
Temples/markets/canals tons of info on all that on line.

Remember when you read people bitching about the weather, they are usually pasty Brits.

Got it thanks, yea I haven't done any research because I have been so busy, but I think I am just going to book the flights mentioned above and then plan the trip more thoroughly when I have some time in early August.
Thanks for y'alls help.

Neat.
I didn't take a post bar trip but I did with my now wife to India after her bar exam. Good stuff. I'm taking the TX bar now for work. So whoopee!
I agree about going to Chiang Mai and avoiding the train. Those travel writers and movies make trains seem amazing, and they probably can be under the right circumstances, but if you are on any kind of tight schedule or plan I would avoid it. If you had 3 weeks I'd consider it.
I decided to check out Siem Reap over Chiang Mai. May regret it, may not. Who knows. Can't go wrong probably. Mai is supposed to be awesome.
Sho Nuff lived in Phuket for a time. He should come around at Aloha time, since apparently he just lives in exotic locales(Hawaii now) exclusively like a dick.

Chiang Mai would be a cool place to live. Lots of temples, very cheap, fast wifi.
It really just depends on what you are looking for. If I was 22 and wanting to party and bang skanks, it wouldn't be high on the list.

When in Dec, Teddy?
I will be Bangkok--->Chiang Mai --> Seim Reap --> Koh Chang
a little over 3 weeks, starting Dec. 27
I was going to take the sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai for the experience...anyone have experience with that? The flight is only $37.
I also wanted to go to Phi Phi rather than Koh Chang, but I heard Phi Phi was not the same since the Tsunami and it would have also been nearly impossible for me to travel there from Siem Reap.

You mean the train, I hope.

Nah, train is like $20 for 2nd class sleeper. Flights are that cheap.

I took a flight from Manila to El Nido on a cheap carrier. Probably the most scared I have ever been in my life.
We are about 300 feet off the ground (landing) and the pilot turns the plane straight up like a rocket and banked hard right. Pretty sure I shite myself.
I asked him why after we landed and he said he decided to land going the other direction.

Who are you travelling with and what are you hoping to "experience" at night? I have a cousin who took it and said she wouldn't do it again and basically talked me out of it.
I think the idea is better than the reality.

Thanks for the input Afro. I'll be traveling with my wife. May just be better to get settled in Chiang Mai and have an extra half day there.

Sub $50 flights are pretty common on their domestic carriers throughout much of Asia.

I fly out Dec.24th landing in Bangkok on Christmas, then Siem Reap for two days, then fly the 30th to Phuket and ferry to Ko Yao Noi and stay 5.5 days. So it looks like we just miss each other in Siem Reap with that awesome 3 weeks you have. Not ideal, I wanted to check out Kanchanaburi or Chiang Mai, but the wife can't take as much time as I can with billable hours. Big Chang in GoT or Little CHang in Andaman sea?
I heard the same thing about Phi Phi, but also that due to the day tours, its slammed unless you can be at the Maya Bay by 8AM. So its worth it if you stay on the Phi phi the night before then get an early ride over.
I think Koh Hong is a reasonable substitute for ad day trip IMO:

I posted in this thread awhile back about trying to earn miles to fly to hawaii for our wedding/honeymoon. Since then my fiance and I have both accumulated 130k AA miles each due to mainly signup bonuses ( US Airways,AA GOLD and Platinum). Our wedding isn't until September of 2016 so we still have time to earn some more miles. We are hoping to fly ourselves and both of our parents for free with these miles.
We live in shreveport while our parents live in Lake Charles. We are basically open to flying from DFW, IAH, or if somehow availability out of SHV. Does anyone know much about how the availability usually is for these routes for saaver award miles. We planned to fly our parents from say a wednesday to a wednesday. while we were hoping to do two weeks with one of the weeks being in maui for the "honeymoon". For example SHV>HNL>OGG>SHV for 2 + IAH>HNL for 4 all in under 260k miles (130k each). Is this reasonable?
Lastly, any hotel recommendations for maui? We have Honolulu covered as we are staying at Hale Koa(military resort their on waikiki).
Thanks!

Haha well I will be the guinea pig.
The guy I am going with doesn't really do much in the way of planning so I am going to have to figure out the itinerary before the half moon party on that Sunday Aug 23. Since we land from Melbourne in BKK late Monday night I figure we have Tue-Saturday to explore and still make it to island on time.
