3d printing, worth investing in?

Seems like this may be the next big advancement and is gaining traction through the media (guns made from printer, sub $500 3dboard printer). What are the money boards thoughts on this technology?

I kind of see it as similar to the photo printing craze. Yea there will be models cheap enough for you to do this at home, but will people want to? I think the photo printing problem had a lot to do with the cost of paper and ink. This may not be the same for the 3D printing world but its something to consider. It may be more likely to have retail centers where people can submit there designs to be created.

I worked in R&D in the oil field for 4 years and we had a couple. They are pretty badass, but they broke all the time and the material was expensive. I'm sure the technology will progress.

I either read in an article or saw on TV (Discovery/History maybe?) that there are plans to 3D print Boeing Commercial airplanes by 2040-2050.

Because it would be so heavy the seating capacity on a black box 747 would be only a half dozen?
Not to mention that a crash would still kill you, just inside an intact fuselage.

I would be concerned about it. There are a ton of startups out there creating DIY kits, solid kits, and high-end kits. It's one of those things where the idea is great, but picking the winner(s) is a completely different ballgame.

We have one at the company that I'm currently working for over the summer. It's great for making models and stuff. Well worth our investment.

already dropping in price and increasing in capability. get into the supplies side, like the plastic or metal. think about where HP makes their money.

I used them in school a bit, and depending on the type they can be very "finicky". It's not quite as simple as pressing print, there's support structure (which is a separate material then the rest) that has to be cleaned off after the lengthy printing process is done. A relatively small model can take over a day to print. So, in summary there's a long way to go before they're household items, but engineers and architects use them frequently, so there is demand. Shapeways offers a DIY type of service, where you can send them a model you've created in 3ds max or rhino, etc. They offer a wide variety of materials, and send you the finished product. Pretty cool, I used them once and was pleasantly surprised. The shite ain't cheap though.
As far as investing, DDD and SSYS are the two big players, and both have had pretty big run ups recently. I like them long term, but would wait for a pullback/missed quarter or something. Just my rookie 2 cents.

Very interesting business with a big future. But it's trading at a pricey 37x earnings with an estimated 10-25% long term growth rate. I wouldn't chase this one up. Wait for a pullback
