For all you analytical folks out there, if you take a job that is only giving you 3 weeks vacation when you have 4 weeks now, do you factor that into the new offer monetarily?

So if you're making $150k/year right now that's about $2678/week.

So if my number to take a new job is $160k, wouldn't I want to increase that to $162,678 to make it the raise plus the lost week of vacation?

Or am I over analyzing this?!?!

I'm assuming if you're making that kind of money, you are well educated and successful. That makes this question even more puzzling

Oh, my answer is yes, you are definitely over analyzing. Be happy someone is paying you $160,000 and you get to enjoy 3 weeks of vacation. Although if you are happy with where you currently work, would you rather the 6% increase in pay or an extra week off?

I dont think you're over-analyzing it, but that's just me. I would want at least the extra $2600. I would actually probably want more.

Honestly, assuming all other things equal, I would probably take 150k with 4 weeks vacation over 160k with 3 weeks. Unless I knew I would earn more quickly.

ETA: to clarify, just because I would want it, doesn't mean I would expect it. I was just saying that I would consider vacation as a factor for sure.

I negotiated working from home so I can take a vacation every day if I want as long as my cellphone is with me.

There's a lot of flexibility. I don't have an office job.

This is the first year of the 4 weeks vacation so it's not like I'm used to it. I've always had 3. I don't think it's a deal breaker not getting 4, but was just curious what everyone thought.

I'd rather have that extra week than 2k

I think that the company policies are what they are and they'll laugh you out of the building if you ask to be compensated for vacation time that they don't offer. I know I would.

My company wouldn't. In fact, I don't want my next raise to be monetary. I want another week vacation.

More time off is a happier and more productive worker.

My wife went from a company that had 4 weeks to one that offered 3. She told them she wanted to keep her extra week and they said OK. She had nothing to lose besides them telling her no, which they didnt.

It would factor in to my decision. As someone else stated, I think I'd take 150k and 4 weeks over 160k and 3 weeks. Also, I don't think I'd leave a job over a ~6% raise, if I were making 150k+. That is, unless there were other contributing factors (advancement, much better benefits, more stable company, etc...).

You could probably ask for more money due to a decrease in their benefits package versus what you were receiving at your old company. I don't think that it would be out of line or unreasonable.

When I was negotiating my current position after the initial offer I countered with same salary and 2 extra weeks of vacation.

Tell them you currently get 4 weeks of time off, and ask if you can have 4? My company, as well as several of our competitors, will either match your time off or give you an added 1-2 weeks off immediately upon your hiring.

Another question to ask is,
- With the new company will you ever be able to get 4 weeks off and if so, how many years will it take?
- Does the new company offer a better opportunity to grow and receive improved raises?

I think if it takes around ~3 years to get bumped up from 3 weeks off to 4, or the company offers better growth/pay raises then it might be the better deal in the end. Definitely bargain for a week of time off when you sign your paper work so that you will get some of the time your losing back.

Which is fine. The OP wanted to get a higher salary because the company policy for a new employee wasn't the same as the policy at the company where he put in the time to get the extra week. I can see asking for an extra week but not salary in lieu of it.

well he is definitely over thinking it, but its not unusual to ask for more money and to come up with some reasons for this ask.

i would ask for an extra week but I would be surprised if they gave it to you.

Wtf? I get 4 weeks at like 10 years of time. I'm really happy getting 3 at 5 years recently.

Only having 2 weeks sucked especially when the wife got 3 to start.

He's getting $10,000 more a week at the new job but he thinks he's being robbed of vacation time and wants more money for that "lost vacation". I still find the whole thing fricking hilarious.

I find it hard to use all 3 weeks I have now

And its not hard to figure out how to swing a day here and there 5 times. Are you going to take 4, full weeks, at various times?

No, you are not. My advice go for everything you can get. Go forward knowing you gave your best effort and have no regrets.

I recently was offered a job at another firm. I negotiated a matching offer from my current employer ($11,000 raise and not quite at $160,000, but not far behind). I also wanted an extra week of vacation because the new firm offered 4 weeks. I got the extra week and stayed. I have a better work relationship with my management than i had previously. I am happy with what i make now.

Not overanalyzing IMO, but I think it's more important to consider what is important to you. $2k or an extra week off.

Can you purchase vacation time?

Are their hours more flexible, or do you have an alternative schedule/working arrangement? When do you get to 4 weeks?
