insecurity, which is ridiculous because ULL isn't going to challenge LSU in football or take over as the flagship regardless of what they call themselves. other public universities improving only helps the state, LSU will always be the top dog
It's not an insecurity thing, it's just a "put them in their place" thing that's probably prompted by all of the animosity towards LSU.

It's like a person that goes by a name all his life, and all of a sudden decides that the world needs to stop calling him that name and call him something else, when he's in his 30's - as if that makes a difference of being a much more intellectual or better person because of a name change. That's why LSU fans make fun of it. Has zero to do with envy.
Example: Eddie Vedder wanting to be called "Ed"
or Katie Holmes wanting to be called "Kate" now

They changed from USL to UL cause the alumni couldn't remember the three letter acronym.

If anything, the fact that ULL alumni/faculty/students/supporters actually read into LSU laughing at it as, "they're just envious and threatened" is what makes it even more tacky.

So then do you refer to them as SLI?

Wiki, they aren't. Period.
That's why they need to be called ULL. If one day they distinguish themselves as clearly above and beyond their brother and sister institutions in the UL system, then maybe officially and/or unofficially they will be recognized as such.

No I call them what they are: ULL. I think the name change thing was tacky from the beginning.
You can take a complete hillbilly redneck from the sticks and put him in an Armani suit. But as soon as he opens up his mouth, you realize that he is, in fact, a complete hillbilly redneck from the sticks.

Oh, and PS: UL Monroe is ranked HIGHER academically than UL Lafayette is. ULM is a tier 3 and ULL is a tier 4.
So if anyone should be the flagship, its ULM. All hail ULM, the REAL UL!

You mean all ten of them that post on it? The same ten that show up to all the games.

OK, so I gotta ask....
If ULM wanted to be called "Louisiana" would LSU fans whine about it?
Or is it only if ULL wants to be called that do LSU fans get all pissy, simply because of the animosity between the schools?

ULM would be more deserving, but they still don't stand out enough. To be a flagship you have to take care of your own house and be the best university in your system. Neither ULM or ULL is clearly that.
That's ULL's problem. They have the alumni and community/region support that if they made that a true focus and long term goal, they could accomplish it. Use the regional university level resources you have to the fullest and kick the crap out of the ULMs and LaTechs of the state.
But no. Instead they self indulge in penis envy and self importance beyond their accomplishments.

The way most states university systems are laid out, you have a flagship school in each system. In this case, UL-L is the flagship in the University of Louisiana system, which is why it doesn't need the city as a qualifier, just like LSU is the flagship school in the Louisiana State system.
Uhhh no. There is no flagship in the UL system , hence the compromise for both Lafayette and Monroe to use the city desiignations in their names. LSU Is the only recognized flagship of higher educatin in the state of Louisiana.

Read the thread before commenting people. This has already been addressed.

Actuually, the legislative compromise to allow USL to become ULL was that they would be allow to change their name ONLY if another school also agreed to take the UL designation with their city name behind it. Monroe agreed and a compromise was born.

Boy, you don't know exactly how much you hit the nail on the head with that one! Good job!

ULM should be a CC along with about 5 other 4 year universities in the state.
