this case, UL-L is the flagship in the University of Louisiana system,

Bull shite. It's no better or more important than ULM.

it doesn't need the city as a qualifier

As long as there are two equal institutions in Lafayette and Monroe, the city will have to remain part of the name.

But you're forgetting that ULL calling themselves "Louisiana" would only be in their marketing. They will still officially be "University of Louisiana at Lafayette" and that will be printed on the diplomas).

you are assuming that i will be competing for a job against a ULL graduate. what if im going for a job against someone from ... idk. SMU? FAU? Syracuse? pick any school. they will assume that the other schools are better because they are not a sub-school of a larger university

another thing i don't get is when people use the whole

There is already a UL (Louisville)

there are multiple schools with the same abbreviations

USC's
MSU's
UT's
ect

whats the big deal if there are two UL's?

1) The Louisiana System was created with no designated flagship university.

2) Tulane's official name is "Tulane University of Louisiana."

Tulane has more right to be called the "University of Louisiana" than ULL. Paul Tulane's name was added to the school's title when he became its benefactor.

no offense man, but nationally people already assume that ULM is a "sub-school" and nothing ULL does is going to change that

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Louisiana

quote:

In 1984, the then-University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) received permission from Tulane University to adopt the name "The University of Louisiana." USL applied to the then-Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities (now The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors) for permission to change its name to "The University of Louisiana," and on April 27 of that year permission was granted. The Louisiana Board of Regents quickly filed suit with the Board of Trustees, and on May 22, District Judge William H. Brown stripped the university of the name, upon which it reverted to USL. Immediately thereafter, the state legislature removed from all of the boards of higher education their historical powers over names of buildings, colleges and universities, and the legislature reserved that right solely for itself.

Jesus Christ, I didn't realize how deep this immature nit-picking really went. LSU fans have officially lost all rights to make fun of "The Ohio State University" for their name issues.

it gets even worse IMO if you read the entire history. not only were they not allowed to use the name "university of louisiana" but they couldn't even use "university of louisiana-lafayette" unless they got another school to adopt the name. even that was too threatening

Then you have USC....which dominates....

get the point?

I thought USC was a private school. And in your California series of names, I have always heard Cal-Berk referred to as "Cal" and the rest as "U-C Whatever"

Seems like ULL wants to assume the Cal spot in the UL-Whatever naming conventions.

I'm just glad SLU stuck with Southeastern and didn't change like the other two schools.

University of Louisiana-Hammond
UL-Hammond
ULH

How weird does that sound and look?

And don't forget, there's always South Central Louisiana State University. Go Muddawgs!

I went to ULM and personally don't care what they call themselves.

I did an internship in Laffy during the early 2000s. Cicis pizza offered a student discount with a UL id. I gave them my ULM id and asked about the discount. They didn't want to give it to me, but they relented after I put up a bitch.

At least NLU/ULM had their whole identity changed from NLU Indians to ULM Warhawks. I know there was a little overlap in between, though.

I've only been to ULM once for the girls Sweet 16 a long time ago. Did they have to replace the big "N-L-U" and Indian logo on that one tower? I would've hated to have had that job, but then again maybe it looked so big because I was only 10 or so at the time.

If it was the one that was done vertically, that must've been it. I was so young I just remembered having to break my neck backwards to look at it.
