they are ULL. and I attend ULM. If they get away with being UL than that makes it look like ULM is a sub-school of ULL which it is not. they will not and should not be known as Louisiana or UL.

ULM really had nothing to do with it until the state stepped in and prevented ULL from using the name. ULL received permission from the original university of louisiana to use the name and was granted the right to change their name to UL, then the state stepped in and reversed the decision and told them they could only use university of louisiana-lafayette if another school adopted UL before their name also. ULM agreed to do this.

In this case, UL-L is the flagship in the University of Louisiana system

From everything I've seen on the subject matter, these schools were created on equal footing.

The way most states university systems are laid out, you have a flagship school in each system. In this case, UL-L is the flagship in the University of Louisiana system, which is why it doesn't need the city as a qualifier, just like LSU is the flagship school in the Louisiana State system.

Where did you get this flagship nonsense from? The University of Louisiana system involves eight universities around the state (you can look them up yourself), and, specifically, none of them are considered to be the flagship. Here is an excerpt from the UL system manual:

I. Institutional Status
Each institution within the University of Louisiana System has a distinct character based upon its role, scope, mission and the educational needs of the population it serves. The Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and Carnegie classification systems shall be used to illustrate distinctions and differentiations among member institutions and shall not be used to imply explicitly or implicitly a hierarchy of member institutional rankings. There shall be no institution designated as the main (primary) campus for the University of Louisiana System. Any designation of or reference to a member institution as “flagship,” “lead,” “main,” or by other similar descriptors is prohibited.

My question to you would be why you care so much about this as to make things up?

I really don't mind them calling themselves UL, but making notes asking others to do it is a tad on the homo side.

When I was checking Top 25 scores on ESPN.com last night, they got it right with ULL. Nobody refers to them as UL outside of the Acadiana area.

If it's not officially the flagship, then it is the de facto in the system-the University of Louisiana System, being the largest and most well known (again, of the system)

I don't care about this at all is my point. Who cares if ULL calls themselves "Louisiana." My point is that it is a common practice all over the country and LSU fans look like fricking babies when they whine about it. OK, so "flagship" is a bad term....how about "biggest and most well known of the system, and thus can be identified without the use of the city as a qualifier?"

Oh Really? There is no flagship school of the UL system. Some in Lafayette are trying to make ULL the defacto flagship university of the UL system, but there is no such school. The UL system is based in Baton Rouge, where there is no campus. The system president lives and has an office in Baton Rouge. The legislature set this system up so no school in the system could claim to be greater than the other, hence UL-city designation must be used.

You insecure idiots are clouding the point by arguing semantics. I guess I shouldn't expect much out of people who cry when ULL calls themselves "Louisiana."
