In keeping up with tradition - 9 years ago today, Tiger Nation watched intently as a gloriously mustached head coach hobbled around on crutches and guided an undermatched Pitt Panther team to one of the greatest upsets of the decade over #2 WVU in Morgantown. The upset was vital in propelling #7 LSU to the BCS Championship.

THANK YOU DAVE WANNSTEDT!

Never forget 12/1/07

An absolutely crazy day of college football. Even crazier for Mountaineer fans because not only did they lose out on a shot at the BCSCG, but Rich Rod left for Michigan soon after

That was one set of awesome events taking place to get us into the NC. I remember getting back to the hotel room after the SECCG in Atlanta and Pitt was leading in the 2nd half and we were all shocked watching The Stache was hobbling around on his crutches while coaching his arse off. We still thought WV would come back, but thanfully, they never did. LSU should put up a golden stache statue in his honor for helping us get our 3rd NC.

My dad's family members are West Virginia fans. There was something both sad and satisfying about the twist of fate which occurred that day.

One of the best days ever watching CFB. People may not remember, but even after the insane day of games Lsu still needed the late night Hawaii game to flip in Lsu's favor, IIRC.

This.

How Pitt still managed to win that game was a true miracle.

I still say it was Karma for what the SEC did to LSU in 2006.

Hopefully it will come back around again to LSU for all the other rigged crap we've dealt with since 2007.

I'll never forget. I had to call my buddy just to see if I was putting everything together correctly. LSU was going to jump from No. 7 to No. 2 in one night.

I remember walking out of Tiger Stadium days before that so pissed that Arky beat LSU in 3 OT. I thought for sure there was 0% chance. Bless you Dave.

If Wannstache doesn't win that game.....

1. LSU is not in the BCS title game
2. Les Miles (according to Skip and others) is gone to Michigan
3. LSU gets Saban back from Bama that very winter -- yes, it was going to happen.

Some say the upset led to the eventual collapse of the LSU football program, claiming that by backing into the 2007 national championship, Miles was able to secure a decades worth of job security before finally being fired mid-season in 2016. The void left by Miles was ultimately filled by promoting Ed Orgeron, LSU's then defensive line coach. The decision to hire within a coaching staff blamed for failing to utilize the talented roster is considered by many to signal the return of LSU to the mediocre status it enjoyed in the late 80s and early 90s.

Others point out that while Orgeron is perceived to have no particular coaching specialty, has a lifetime SEC record of 8-23, and was shut out at home against rival Alabama (an accomplish Miles himself surely could have achieved), he is "one of us." and loves LSU. For his part, Orgeron signed with LSU as a player in 1979, but deserted the team after only a few August practices, only to transfer to Northwestern State, some 5 hours away from his hometown of Larose, La.

We watched with a big group of lsu fans in the lobby of one of the hotels right there after the SECCG. That was an awesome evening.

I still regret not buying ticket reserves when they lost to Arkansas. I would have saved a pretty penny.

Well, yes, he was a part of that.

I just remember solid run after run after run being called back.

Then WVU getting away with blatant PI after PI and hold after hold. It was unreal.

They literally fumbled the game away.

Foreshadowing in the Georgia Dome: LSU goes up 14-13 and goes fumble, INT, punt, punt, punt til the run the clock out drive.

Thanks for the pick six, Zenon.

Yeah, I'm sure that was a "done deal" just like all the other "done deals" on here.
