I remember that guy. I thought he was weird but later found that they hired people from some organization for the blind. He wasn't completely blind obviously, but he had a handicap.
Speaking of that snack bar, I remember watching the "Superman" movie in there one afternoon. They had maybe 15 or so chairs set up in there for people to watch the movie.

quote:OK, so that was definitely after my job there then, although I still lived in ES. That snack bar was set up as part of a state program to provide jobs for the blind. You see blind people working snack bars in many, many government buildings around the state.
Oh, it happened. It was the spring semester of 1981. The snack bar was open and manned by a surly rude guy whose eyes pointed off in a different direction from where he was looking. He sold chips, drinks, cigarettes... snack bar stuff. You had to walk through the snack bar to get to the laundry room.
This guy in particular, got the bright idea to buy a moped to ride around on because you didn't have to get a license for it. A blind guy driving a motorized vehicle - WCGW? Well, the inevitable happened and he messed himself up pretty bad in an accident.

I know some were occupied late as 91 when I sold programs on Game days.

My dad was in the stadium dorm for a semester in the 80's and he said he hated it

Pretty sure they closed th stadium dorms for good spring 1991
On another note a well known former Tigerland bar owner and LSU memorabilia collector told me one time he got a phone call from the stadium facility manager. The guy told him they were cleaning out some old storage rooms and he could have whatever they found. He showed up with a truck and trailer and took away boxes of sideline equipment, yard markers, stadium signs, football equipment and LSU football uniforms that went back to at least the 50s. He put it all in storage and I guess he still has it all to this day. Some of that stuff would be considered priceless to collectors now.

I was in Room 241, South Stadium for 2 years, 64 thru 66. South Stadium was better than the rest. Rooms were like Old Graham, Cost $119 semester, vs, $81 semester5 for North, East and West. South cost same as Pentagon. Rooms were hot. We survived with a floor fan, but had no afternoon sun in south est corner of dorm. Open showers, toilets a la military. We had acceptable gas heat. Amiable neighbors and loose RA's made for fun shenanigans such as rolling 3 or 4 bowling balls down the curved halls toward an unsuspecting group of drunks returning in the wee hours.
The Spartan conditions were a strange source of a certain esprit de corps-- "We live in The Rock-- We're Tough! -- Gotta problem with that?" type of chip on our shoulder, all the while envying our Classmates fortunate enough to live in apartments such as College Park, High Point, or Studio Arms. Little did I know that, 50 years later, I would be sitting at my keyboard, proudly boasting of living in "The Rock." (Cont'd)

South Stadium, Part II
Of interest to Ranters would be our encounter with Bear Bryant and his 1965 edition of the Ken Stabler led Crimson Tide,
The last room at the end of our floor was a rare 3 man room with two sets of windows directly overlooking the Visiting Team Gate. Each Friday afternoon before a home game, 10 or 12 of us would crowd into that room when the opposition arrived for a light practice-- welcoming them with a lively TIGER BAIT!! chant. In every instance, the opposing head coach would hurry his team off the busses into the locker room as quickly as possible-- distancing them from such rabble as us. Except One. In 1965, undefeated Bama arrived like everyone else, bu... Contd

Coach Bryant had his team get off the busses and stand there below us and endure the Tiger Bait chanting UNTIL WE GOT TIRED OF YELLING AT THEM. I remember the blank stares from Bear and Kenny Stabler. Finally, when we tired of jeering, only then did the Bama team go to the locker room.
Of course, the next day, Bama romped, 31-7, on their way to one of their 74 National Championships, but the kicker to this tory was the Report from the Visitors Locker Room in the Sunday Advocate-- "Coach Bryant could hardly be heard over the din behind him of his Team endlessly cheering, "Tiger Bait, Tiger Bait ..."

I don't know if Bear Bryant knew where the Psychology Department was on the campus in Tuscaloosa--- but I am convinced that he was a pre-eminent practitioner of Psychology.
This has been an enjoyable walk down an amber filtered memory lane with some of my thoughts of living in Tiger Stadium so long ago along with 1499 of my closet friends.

He used to have some of the old wooden stadium concourse signs in the bar. I'd kill to have one of those.

Asbestos is not harmful if it's not airborne. There are products in stores that still contain asbestos.

Lived one summer semester there, provided by the athletic office. Wasn't hot as we had a huge window unit. Place was old and smelled as much. Didn't enjoy it, but it served a purpose.

Re no AC in any of the dorms: My dad took an engineering drawing course one summer and was working on his final project where he had to draw some machine part or whatever. He was almost finished when he put his sweaty arm down on the paper and ruined it. He changed his major from engineering to prelaw after that

That's exactly what my room in North Stadium looked like, except our beds didn't have the upper bunks, and there were only two windows in my room.
Blast from the past. Thanks for the photo.
