I remember Damian James (the States number one recruit) saying how Faulk wanted him to be his team mate and that sealed his recruitment, which struck me as odd sense fault was going pro.

I also remember that Damion James was one of the first people Saban kicked off the team.

I hate to tell you and other haters but Saban left a huge footprint here

I hate to tell you and other folks with poor reading comprehension skills, but I never said I hated Saban nor that he was not a major architect of the current success of LSU football. All I said was that he gets ALL of the credit, and he does not deserve ALL of the credit.

Wasn't kicked off until the middle of the 02 season.

If true and Lsu didn't make it happen to bring him back, they get the mediocrity they deserve. Idiotic to keep bufoon over Saban.

That was a great interview and I can't believe all the stuff he was saying. It's like he was drunk or maybe he's reached that age of elderlyness where he has no filter and blurts out wtf he wants.

I know enough. Money talks and Lsu has the money. Skips pride played poker and he lost and lost big. Saban will go down as the greatest coach ever. He's worth every penny and skip had the chance to make it happen. His 5 titles and ego got in the way

Worry about your own reading comprehension before mouthing off.

OK, so Saban gets 99% of the credit. Because that is the truth. The foundation of everything going on now is built by Saban. Deal with it.

All bs aside... that was a great interview. Left no doubt that despite his coaching deficiencies... Les was as good of a guy behind closed doors as he was in public.

So who were they passed down to? JJ left in 2011. Jennings didn't get there till 2013. Doubt Mettenburger had them.

Skip was quite competent as an AD. Les was doing good at the time, and there was a contract in force between the university and Les. It would have been a major public relations nightmare, not to mention potential legal, to terminate Les at the time just because Nick wanted to come back. You also need to keep in mind, that the powers that be were beginning to get annoyed with some of Nick's behavior, as well as him being shopped at the end of every season. Saban had no buy out if he decided to leave. He doesn't have one at Alabama either. The annual crisis was beginning to be a source of irritation for the administration. There were those who wanted Saban back, but there were also those with who some bridges had been burned beyond repair.

Pretty easy to say with the gift of hindsight.

My first post on this site was a thread wondering if we could get Saban back because he was not working out in Miami. I got banned.

Well, who's banning now, huh? (please don't answer that)

That wasnt his choice

Yes it was. The Dolphins/Saban made an offer; they just did a low-ball one because they thought they had leverage on him.
From 2009 Miami Herald
quote:

Slated for free agency, Brees negotiated a new deal with the Chargers expecting to remain with his original team. But San Diego offered a cautious, five-year, $50 million deal that was heavily loaded with incentives. The contract made clear that San Diego had serious concerns about Brees and his shoulder. When the Chargers declined to improve their offer, Brees did two things:

He got a statement from renown surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery, saying his shoulder was 100 percent and not any more likely to be reinjured than it ever was. The statement was released to the media.

And then Brees went hunting for a new team in free agency.

quote:

Saban, ever the competitor, wanted to get out front of the Saints so he and his wife flew to Alabama to meet Brees and his wife for dinner. Saban fell in love with Brees. The coach was certain Brees was his guy.

The two agreed that Brees, who had already scheduled a visit in New Orleans first, would come to South Florida afterward.

quote:

So he left New Orleans without signing a contract and flew to South Florida. He had dinner with Saban at a place called Grille 66 in Fort Lauderdale which to this day remains where the Dolphins take their free agents and coach candidates and alike.

Everything seemed cool but the next day weirded Brees out. He was reportedly subjected to a six-hour physical that centered, of course, around his surgically repaired shoulder. To this day, I am not certain whether or not the Dolphins made Brees an offer. A good source close to Brees insisted Miami did, although it was a lowball offer.

So Saban was in love with Brees (and knew that Brees wanted to play in Miami), then Dolphins did an in-depth physical (after James Andrews said the shoulder was good) and then made a low-ball offer. Seems pretty coincidental don't you think?
