is that the optimal outcome here would have been to instill discipline in TM and prevent him from repeatedly breaking team rules so that we never reached this impasse in the first place. That would have deserved actual praise.

You keep saying this but haven't said what he should have done to "instill discipline". It's ridiculous and you already bash miles for everything else anyway.

Guys... It's football. Comes with rules. You thing this is bad? Get a real job in a high stress industry and try breaking the rules. No matter how good you are, you still have to follow some basic rules. The reality is that in the real world there are consequences for all of your actions. Some come more quickly than others. I raised three sons... it was all I could do to keep them in line. And, we still had problems. 85+ teenagers loaded with testosterone would have been a nightmare.
I like Miles, I love LSU. I don't pout or slit my wrist if something goes wrong with the football team. If this ruins your weekend, wait until you have a child that runs off...
Keep it in perspective.

a very long time since I posted....
You folks take care,

but i'm proud that Les Miles has the stones to kick him off the team, if he was really breaking team rules.

after seeing what's happened with coaches all over the country recently, including Penn St. It makes me think the LSU program is in good hands.

I never had any doubt!!

I feel sorry for Coach. You could tell he was distraught over this, but, as usual, he did the right thing.

LSU's best game last was the Auburn game, after he disciplined players, including Mathieu, for the same thing.

Hopefully, the whole team will respond the same way this season and realize the opportunity they have to play football at LSU, and possibly go down in history as one of our best teams ever.

Discipline (on and off the field) has never been a Miles strong point.

I was listening to the local guys on ESPN 104.5 and they were saying the staff took some measures to monitor him but didn't explain what exactly.

Well, let's think this through step by step. We know that TM was suspended last season for violation of team rules. We know at that point the staff should have been on notice of the fact that he was a potential disciplinary problem. The staff certainly should have recognized he was one of our best defensive players. Hence, by the week of the Auburn game last season, the staff knew that one of its most important players was a potential disciplinary problem. We now know that approximately ten months later, Mathieu committed some other rules violation and was dismissed as a result. Hence, we can conclude without any doubt that whatever steps the staff took to try to instill discpline and ensure compliance between last year's suspension and this year's dismissal FAILED. Whatever those steps were, they FAILED.

Now why should the staff be showered with acclaim for failing to instill discipline in one of its most important players? That escapes me.

P.S. I don't "bash" Miles for everything. I have bashed him for the pathetic showing in the NCG, which he deserved. Similarly, he deserves some blame for repeated disciplinary problems within his own program.

I agree. Coach Miles did everything in his power in this case. This one is not on Miles, he's a great coach!

I've read some of your posts in the past and you're certainly one of the more thoughtful posters on TD (in spite of the flak you're getting now).

But I just don't think a coach can screen prospects on the front end or exercise control during their on-campus time to gurantee that no one will ever wander off the reservation. IMO, that's an unrealistic expectation.

What's happened ain't good. But how we (LSU) are responding is commendable.

I don't think that The312 thinks Miles is a POS or anything. I think that this occurring should make us question his disciplining techniques. Sure, it is 100% on TM. But, if it doesn't make you wonder about whether Les Miles is doing the best he can with disciplining the players, then you're just wearing blinders.

I agree, Miles is responsible, but only to a point. He is not with these guys 24/7, 365. If someone is going to make a poor decision, they are going to make it.

Tyran must have talked smack about LEE doing so good in his pro debut! How Miles should have played him in the NCG! LOL

He just hates the fact that Miles is our coach, that's all.

You don't know what his "techniques" are to begin with.

But you don't have enough information on what he is and isn't doing to to start.

He knows that but doesn't care. He's going to take this opportunity to take some anger out on Miles.

It wasn't TM7 out there playing. It was a team! We're stacked and we're going to be fine!

Yeah, that's apparent by having to kick his best player off the team twice.

But, I do have the end results to base make a judgment. The end results seem to reflect that Miles either:

1. Recruits players that won't end up being able to follow his discipline.
2. Has discipline that is ineffective in helping some players stay in line.

Again, it is the players' fault. But, to act like Miles is some great coach because of this is retarded. Just because you see someone disciplining someone in public doesn't mean they are doing a good job in private.

ETA: "because of this" above. Miles is a great coach. Just has some questionable discipline issues.
