Yep. It makes one look ignorant to deny NS was the main catalyst to LSU becoming a national power. Were there other factors? Sure, but to say that one of the greatest coaches in CFB history wasn't instrumental, is retarded.

McElroy should explain his mindset theory to West Virginia, guess Rich Rodriguez is still responsible for that program too right?

Saban is responsible for LSU's success between 2000 and 2004.

He's been gone for 10 years.

Giving a coach from a decade ago credit for a team's current success is just plain stupidity.

Gerry Dinardo was the worst 10 years ago....until Saban started getting credit for LSU's revival after he went to Bama....then Dinardo all of a sudden became revered

3-8 & 4-7 seasons... We were about to slide back into mediocrity had NS not been hired.

Does McElroy attribute his failure to Saban?

nick saban can go frick himself, because hes a smug prick, but to say what mcelroy said is wrong is obtuse.

You also may want to get off the interwebz and enjoy your last few years.

Former Alabama quarterback and current SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy said Nick Saban should be credited with LSU’s ongoing success.

McElroy spoke yesterday to our good friend Bo Mattingly, host of ‘SportsTalk with Bo Mattingly’, via 247Sports, and he expounded on this, well, funny notion.

“If you look at LSU, they’ve had sustained success since Saban left because he established that mindset,” McElroy said. “Les Miles obviously did take over that program and has done a terrific job in his own right, but once you establish that mindset and have the leadership that holds young players accountable, that success shouldn’t soon dwindle.”

McElroy couldn’t be more wrong. Once Saban’s recruits and signees were gone – and really once Saban announced he was leaving for the Miami Dolphins, the team developed Les Miles’ mindset and identified with his persona.

LSU was successful while Saban coached at LSU. However, Saban did not revive the program, and the program is not successful now because of Saban.

LSU sucess was started by Dinardo when got Kevin Faulk to sign with LSU. Nick comes along after Dinardo was ran out because of his love Lou Teppers failed defensive scheme and makes a name for himself with the talent he inhereted and brought into LSU. LSU made Nick Saban into a legend as much as Saban help keep what Dinardo started and advanced it beyond. With a compatent defensive Coordinator Dinardo would have also continued with the success he started at LSU.

Les Miles has come along after Nick Saban departure and kept the LSU football program sucessfull where it remains to this day. Les has been at LSU for almost ten years so I would say the sucess that the program currently enjoys rest squarely on Les Miles shoulders and Not Nick Saban.

Nah. The article says "ongoing" success. Impossible for Saban to be responsible for that.

As an aside, it's going to be painful to listen to the SEC analysts this Fall. Geez...

Saban is a big part of why LSU has turned in to a destination school. Without Saban, Miles probably doesn't even take the call from hiring committee. Sustaining a program is actually tougher than you think. If McElroy thinks any coach could have done that, he's mistaken. All you have to do it look at what Dooley and Muschamp have done as head coaches and I don't think either one could have been promoted and maintained LSU's status as well as Miles had. Fisher turned FSU around but look how long it took him to do that.

If McElroy thinks following Saban is that easy, wait until Bama has to do it - do you really think Smart can sustain it as long as Miles has in a tougher SEC than when Saban was at LSU.

Emmert had a bigger impact on LSU's success than everyone mentioned in this thread.

Obviously. It's an honest assessment to make that Saban was instrumental in getting LSU back on track, but that success could have EASILY been very short lived had Miles turned out to be what far too many of LSU's own fans think he is. Miles inherited a fantastic program and has arguably made it even better than when he inherited it. Miles' biggest issue, unfortunately, is that our previous coach decided to come back into the SECW and build a monster in our own neighborhood. Had he gone off and been successful in the NFL, Miles' success would be entirely his own and no one would give two shits about Nick other than on those rare occasions he'd deem us worthy enough to come back and wave at us for various reunions.

While we're at it, is Saban responsible for Michigan St's success too?

Emmert finally took the bull by the horns and bucked the LSU system to get things done, he gave a big FU to the good ole boys and did it his way.
