onsider this, Pete played during an era when players were prohibited from palming or carrying the ball. He was forced, by rule, to have his hand clearly on top of the ball at all times when dribbling, and still despite these restrictions he was a freakin ball handling wizard

Great point, I've always said this is the biggest mistake the nba and ncaa has made in BB. Tweaking the rule would have been better. But some guys that play now would never have made it if the had to dribble.
I saw the pistol a few times with the Jazz, unreal ball skills!

I went to his basketball camp in Florida in the 80's .. it was a surreal overload of drills, nutrition and Christianity.

No sugar, no salt .. no nothing. it was quite a shock to the system.

It was a tough camp .. none of that vacation atmosphere like Dixie. His old man was there my first year, then passed away before the next.

Pistol was there the whole time and embraced it. He would come to the league games and lead the drill sessions. He also told us stories of his boozing and drugs .. and made us watch his 69 pt or whatever game vs the knicks ...

Hard to compare player but Pete was years ahead of his time and one of the greatest ever.

Saw him play many times at the cow palace as a kid.

1975 he played in an exhibition game with the Jazz vs Atlanta at the Assembly Center following the LSU purple/gold game.
The only game he ever played in what would become the PMAC

I was 13 years old and me and a buddy went to the locker room following the game hoping to get Pete's autograph, surprisingly we were the only ones there when Pete came out the dressing room.
He gladly signed our LSU schedules and even chatted a few minutes with us.
He then invited us into the locker room and introduced us to Jazz Assistant Coach and NBA all-star Elgin Baylor.

I will always remember Pete for that night.

I remember the first time I saw video of pete at LSU. I was shocked and thought to myself 'this can't be pete maravich, he's missing some shots"

Seriously, I thought he never missed a shot in his life. I grew up with my dad and my grandfather regurgitating all these pistol pete stories over and over and over lol. I can recite them all. I don't know how much of it is actually true

Beyond question- he was the greatest!! But these 'new' little shitnose media types have him out of the top 5 now, which is a disgrace.

I was at Pete's 68 point game against the Knicks in the dome...

I saw one game against one of Wooden's UCLA teams. Before the game when Wooden was asked about Pete, he said something about how UCLA had seen great players before and knew how to defend against them.

1st there was one guard on Pete, after a few minutes there were two guards on Pete, after a quarter UCLA was playing three guards on Pete, after the half there were four guards on Pete. UCLA was playing a Center and four Guards at that point.

Pete went up and down the court dribbling like they weren't even there. I don't recall exactly how well he did that night - I think he only made the low 30s. UCLA won though - the remainder of the LSU team wasn't up to UCLA's or Pete's level.

I believe I saw most of Pete's games from his sophomore year on. When he was a freshman on the freshman team (yes, that was the rule back then), I was a HS senior and not at LSU yet.

I see where calculations have been made concerning the 3-point line and we all know that he would have had a greater average but what we don't know is in many situations he might have made more 3 pointers knowing that the situation called for a 3 point shot and took a step back from a long 2 to a 3 point. I guess the reverse might have happened too but I think he would averaged even more than what we could measure from old video and saying that would have been a 3-pointer. I think he would have been in the 60's for his average.

Was't Pete the first white guy asked to play for the Globetrotters?

When Pete was a freashman at LSU, freshman games (freshman couldn't play with the varsity at the time)were jam packed and there would be traffic jams leaving the arena when the varsity team came out to play.

Anything that's considered modern day showtime in the NBA, Pete was doing it 35 years ago.
