If i am calculating correctly he is 64 years young on Tuesday, June 22nd. Ironically the same birthday as myself. I want those of you to share storys of watching the Pistol and your memories. He has been my idol since i was a little kid. He was a freak and averaged 44 points per game at LSU. Though i never had the chance to see him play because i wasn't born yet ive studyed and done my reserach. There will never ever be a individual like him.

Thanks for your time and remember !

Without a 3 pt line. Many analysts say that number would have been in the 60s or 70s with a 3pt line

TigerTatorTots, i am just speechless. That's such an incredible stat. 60's and 70's if the 3pt line!

Yea, Its unreal. We see people in todays age (JJ Redick and Kevin Durant) averaging close to 30 which seems like a boatload. I couldn't imagine watching this guy run circles around other teams and score at will.

It was Dale Brown who researched all of his shots and came up with a figure.

quote:

According to Wikipedia, former basketball head coach of LSU, Dale Brown, noted every shot that Pete Maravich took in college basketball and calculated that Pete would have made an average of 13 three-point shots per game. If he played under current regulations with the three-point arc set at 5.8 metres (19-foot 9 inches) from the rim, he would have averaged 57 points per game.

He would be turning 63 next week. Wish I would've had the chance to see him play.

Exactly, then you add the factor of IF there was a 3pt line, he would have taken more 3 pt shots obviously. Hence the number of 60s and 70s that were predicted

that's pretty amazing since even if everyone one of his shots were a field goal from 3pt land his scoring would have been no more than 66 ppg.

This is correct. Pete was born in 1947.

Most amazing basketball player I ever saw.

And just as importantly, without a time clock. Teams would try to freeze the ball on him.

Thank you for that great insight Rouge. So him being passed away wouldn't make him 63 years young?

Edit the original post and use another word instead of "turns." The word connotes that he is still living.

His scoring ability was amazing, but just or more amazing for me was his court awareness and his ability to handle the ball.

Consider this, Pete played during an era when players were prohibited from palming or carrying the ball. He was forced, by rule, to have his hand clearly on top of the ball at all times when dribbling, and still despite these restrictions he was a freakin ball handling wizard.
