If you are going to the game I cannot stress enough if you don't have a parking pass for Reliant parking lots, take the Light Rail to the game. Park in a lot downtown near the rail line (I always park in the lot next to the Metro Transit Building). Take the rail in for the game. It's a breeze and beats the shite traffic around Reliant. Also DO NOT STAY NEAR THE STADIUM!!! I REPEAT DO NOT STAY NEAR THE STADIUM!!!

Hi mdboss. It's not that that is a terrible area, but I would definitely recommend switching locations. The reason is that that location is not conducive to being a part of the pre-game festivities.

Your best bet would be to find somewhere downtown to stay. The Doubletree normally has great rates and is only a few blocks from the rail line.

Think of Houston like a Big corridor with 3 rooms. One on the north side (Downtown), one in the middle (Midtown), one on the south side (Reliant). The train runs directly from the north room, through the middle of the middle room, all the way to the south room.

Downtown is the north side. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, things to do. There will be a large contingency of LSU fans staying downtown and there are also many events. When you really want to go out and start partying, you can hop right on the rail line for $1.25 and shoot down a few stops to midtown where there are an infinite number of bars and it will surely be jam packed for the weekend.

The last stop on the train is Reliant, and while the stadium is nice, the surrounding area is mostly just apartments and some sketchy shops and industrial stuff.

If i were you, I would cancel and move to downtown to a hotel closer to the bars (The doubletree is a bit removed but is a decent rate). There are plenty of other hotels that will have availability. I would also recommend checking out the Hilton Americas. Great propery.

There is a tailgate that is hosted by the LSU Alumni Association which you can find on the 2nd post on the first page. I imagine that will be pretty kid friendly. If you are looking just for things to do and not necessarily LSU related items, you can go to the aquarium downtown or the zoo by Hermann park.

Also, if you are downtown take the kids to Discovery Green. It is a large outdoor area that hosts events and has parks, food trucks, vendors, etc. On the weekend of the game, the kids can go kayaking for $5. Discovery Green

Hey TBM, am arriving late @ Hobby (4:20) due to concert Fri nite wanted to see in Miss. Have a car rental and booked Mainstay med center that will want to check in and freshen up then head to game area. Assume make it to hotel by 6 what options to get there recommend. The hotel says shuttle available and also want to party after, so guess use rail and taxi?

Similar to above, you are going to be off the rail line a little bit so you will definitely want to take Uber or Lyft to get to the game (Download the app and use the codes in the first post to get a free ride). By the time the rail line reaches your stop, it will be pretty full especially that close to game time.

Edit: I suppose you could use their shuttle as well, but if they are making multiple runs don't wait an hour for them to show back up and drive you.

If I were you, I would take Uber or Lyft to the game and following the game, head to the Rail Line. Take the rail line towards downtown and get off at the McGowen stop. That will put you in midtown where all the bars are. You want to walk down mcgowen headed north (northwest just follow the crowds) and you will run into all the bars and restaurants. After you end your night, use Uber or Lyft (whichever one you didn't use your free coupon on earlier)to get back to the hotel. That is a free ride to the game, a $1 ride to midtown, and a free ride back to the hotel.

Thanks!

Yeah, I guess depends on the shuttle situation and traffic getting to hotel at that time but will make it work with the suggestions!

No. While several people are advising against staying in the vicinity of the stadium, I am willing to take my chances. That metro train has never encountered this many people staying downtown & I can foresee a cluster F$$$ getting back after the game. The Crowne Plaza is just too convenient.

No offense, but I do have to disagree with you here. Staying in the vicinity of the stadium is fine and convenient if all you want to do is go to the game or start tailgating at 3PM. However, if you want to truly enjoy Houston, downtown is a much MUCH better place to be.

The metro train has definitely encountered more people than will be present this weekend. Each year the Houston rodeo brings in millions of visitors and the concerts each night not only pack NRG to the brim, but they also have games, exhibits, cattle auctions, and the entire convention center packed with another 10-30 thousand people EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. These folks all park along the metro between the stadium and downtown lots and ride the same lines into the events.

The Metro counts the number of trains it takes to get people to the stadium, and adjusts departure schedules to be able to handle the large crowds.

I am not here to tell you you are wrong, I just want to let you know that the stadium is in the middle of residential, commercial, and industrial surroundings. It is a beautiful stadium and great for games, but you will not have NEAR the experience you would have downtown.

I remember the Atlanta Subway after the SEC Championship game being a nightmare. I am not going down that road again. I am sure downtown Houston is better, but bar hopping on Saturday is not a priority to my group. We will UBER to Astros game Friday night & hang out downtown afterward then UBER back.

A poster above mentioned the Aquarium. I will say the opposite and recommend you save your money. The Houston Aquarium is an overrated, done up Landry's Restaurant (literally, they own it). You spend a ton of money for a 5 minute walk-through exhibit.

If I were looking for something for the kids I would take them to the Museum district (i.e. the Dinosaur exhibit/butterfly room). The zoo is literally a walk across the park from the museums, as well.

You're staying pretty close to the stadium so I would suggest Rice Village for late night on Friday; plenty of bars within walking distance and in a good part of town. Hotel shuttles, in my experience, only run until 10 or so...I would suggest downloading Uber or taxi.

This is more considered the Medical Center area. Houston is pretty different to normal cities where the city is split in three different sections. Downtown, with a plethora of high rises and not much to do (getting better every year, though), Medical Center area with the museums, Rice University, etc., and then the Galleria area.

All are within 10-15 minute drive depending on traffic. Not much night life over in the medical center so you will probably have to drive/taxi.

If I were to recommend somewhere to stay, I would have said the Crowne Plaza off of 59 and Kirby. Central location to 1. the stadium, 2. the galleria area, and 3. bars.

Downtown is alright but I could see it getting repetitive for guests coming in; the 59 and Kirby area has a plethora of things to do (shopping, nightlife, restaurants).
