In the Galleria area, West End is the bar (tv's), Maggiano's Little Italy is good, and Capone's is solid too bar and oven (tv's)
Midtown, front porch pub will be packed so junction bar will be packed. Little Woodrow's is solid, bounce around to Dogwood and Drinkery.
ETA: The Others, not sports bars
Royal Oak - music & patio (passion pit, Phoenix, etc) girls in heels, some gays So if that brothers you this isn't a place for you
Stone's Throw - swank just opened $70 punch bowls
Etro - 80's club
Boheme - good for groups big patio good with wife/gf not a sports bar usually no music cool bar though
Lowbrow - chill hip Houston neighborhood eats & drinks
Barbarella - dance club

Thanks, yeah I recall this Rice area from previous trips there and pretty nice hang out. Just to clarify, I will not be there Fri. nite; arriving at Hobby 4:30 Sat afternoon getting rental car and hightail it to Mainstay for refresh and then head to stadium area ready for some Tiger beat down on those Badgers! Will be looking to party after game and probably hit that area then and use the uber or taxi as you'all said.

No mention of Front Porch Pub? I'd argue this is the best bar in midtown with plenty of outdoor seating and televisions; their frozen Blue Moon is great.

No offense, but I do have to disagree with you here. Staying in the vicinity of the stadium is fine and convenient if all you want to do is go to the game or start tailgating at 3PM. However, if you want to truly enjoy Houston, downtown is a much MUCH better place to be.
The metro train has definitely encountered more people than will be present this weekend. Each year the Houston rodeo brings in millions of visitors and the concerts each night not only pack NRG to the brim, but they also have games, exhibits, cattle auctions, and the entire convention center packed with another 10-30 thousand people EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. These folks all park along the metro between the stadium and downtown lots and ride the same lines into the events.
The Metro counts the number of trains it takes to get people to the stadium, and adjusts departure schedules to be able to handle the large crowds.
I am not here to tell you you are wrong, I just want to let you know that the stadium is in the middle of residential, commercial, and industrial surroundings. It is a beautiful stadium and great for games, but you will not have NEAR the experience you would have downtown.
I've worked the Rodeo for years and have ridden the rail to Texans games and the rodeo on the busiest of nights. It will get you there. It'll be packed tighter than sardines and can take up to an hour to get from downtown to the stadium. There will be security at the gate exiting the Metro and again to enter the stadium. It will be the first big game of the season and the Texans are enforcing NFL security rules for the LSU vs Wisconsin game. The point I'm making is that the Metro is awesome if drinking all day is your goal! Just plan ahead! Plan to be exiting the Metro at about 6:30 to be in line at 7:00 to make kick off. Getting back to downtown.....That's another story.

Yeah I think our crew is going to party downtown/ midtown until about 3 then hop on the metro and head to the stadium for tailgating.

Why are y'all saying don't stay near the stadium?

Because it's not the best area for staying around /night life.
There is literally nothing around the stadium within walking distance. For getting from/to the game it is perfect but outside of those 4 hours, there's nothing around there to do.

Just UBER downtown to the bar of your choice. Depends what your priorities are, but we are avoiding that post game train like the plague.

I honestly doubt the train will be the horror story people are making it. You may have to wait 15 minutes to get on, but they handle larger crowds at the rodeo.

So, not to be THAT guy, but does anybody have any recommendations as to Gentlemen's establishments? We will be staying downtown at the Hilton Americas.
Preferably a classy place.

Not a whole lot to do around the stadium. If you're going for the game only, you should be good.

Well they have little to no availability downtown I just looked just some crappy hotels. this sucks. I look in mid town i guess.
Posted on 8/24/14 at 2:35 am to DALSU
Crowne Plaza and the Hilton downtown both had rooms available last week.

It depends on your definition of "easy" and what time you're looking to get over there.
If it's before the game, you should be able to taxi over there easily. After the game will be hectic.
Friday should be okay.

Why can't they take the rail
Edit: yea, it will be packed after the game. Just stay until the band leaves and grab some drinks at a tailgate
