Up to this point, 2013 is demonstrably better. But they might be cooling off a bit whereas '09 went on an awesome run through the postseason. 2013 has better pitching and defense. Hitting is hard to tell with the bats but the numbers might slightly favor this year if you factor in the bats

ven Ibarra (his hitting has been a bonus) would not be on those 90s teams.
ibarra is about to get drafted because he's really good. He would definitely be a major player on any of lsu's teams

They were even more stacked in '98. Should have been a 3-peat.

One of the best teams to not win it all.
Damn you, Seth Elarton. I don't know what happened in your career since but I'll never forgive for ending 1998's season.

Just think. How many of our losses went to extra innings this year?

We have a damn good club.

one. we're 6-1 in extra inning games this year. we're also perfect on the season, something like 44-0 when leading after 8 innings. We're also 11-2 in 1 run games. Yet you still see a lot of people say we're not a clutch team.

'09 easily, '13 might have slightly more talent at a few key positions, but '09 just had that "it" factor & always came up in the clutch.

I'd have to say the '09 team, but I will admit my biases due to that being my first year at LSU and that team does have the hardware to prove itself. If this team goes 10-1 in the tourney like that one did, we'll talk.

Shear talent it's 09. With that said I think '13 a better team and Aaron Nola is the best player out of both squads.

As everyone else has already pointed out, hitting is tough to compare with the bat change.
It's hard to argue with Bregman Katz Rhymes and Ibarra or Dean Schimpf Lamaheui and Mahtook

I think 09 starting pitching was better.
13 bullpen better
Catcher is a tossup- Ross's arm is far better but Gibbs bat was better and they are comparable as a backstop
Infield is superior for 13
But in my eyes, a Mahtook Landry and Mitchell outfield can not be beaten
Both teams benches are about the same Tyler Moore = Buzzy Haydel

How would 09 team done with the whiffle ball bats that 13 had to play with?

Position by position

Catcher
Gibbs vs Ross - Gibbs clearly better offensively with Ross being better defensively. They both handled their respective staff very well. I would go with Gibbs because of offensive production and the fact that he was no slotch behind the plate either.

1st Base
Ochinko vs Katz - Earlier in the year, you could have put Katz' numbers against almost any former Tiger 1st basemen. Although still productive, he has become quite human as of late. Still Katz' numbers and defense is better than Ochinko.

2nd Base
LeMaheiu vs Jones
Similar builds and skill sets, but LeMaheiu's production overshadows Jacoby. If Jones would have had consistency on offense to go along with his phenominal defense, he could easily win this battle...but for now, we can only speculate. LeMaheiu wins this one.

Shortstop
Nola vs Bregman
I am a huge Austin Nola fan, but Bregman is on a whole new level.

3rd Base
Helenihi vs Ibarra
Helenihi was a servicable 3rd baseman, but Ibarra has possibly the most consistent '13 starter to this point. He is solid in the field and his bat has more than exceeded expectations.

LF
Schimpf vs Rhymes
It's hard to argue what Rhymes has done since he set foot on campus, but based solely on this year, Schimpf has the edge. Similar batting averages, but Schimpf had 22 HR and 70 RBI (and only grounded into 1 DP the whole season).

CF
Mahtook vs Stevenson/Laird
No contest...Mahtook might be a small fraction worse on defense, but even as a freshman, Mahtook's numbers were far better than either of these two.

RF
Mitchell vs Laird/Foster
Again no contest, Mitchell had a great season offensively and defensively. Laird has seriously dropped off offensively and Foster's body of work is too small to compare.

Starting Pitchers
Coleman vs Nola
I can't decide, I would say push

Ranaudo vs Eades
At the beginning of the season, it would be another close race, but Eades has fallen off lately, so Ranaudo wins this pretty easily.

Ross vs Glenn
I actually love Glenn here. He has really come on strong when it counts this season.

Bullpen
Ott/Jones/Bradshaw/Bertuccini vs Cotton/Bourgeois/Rumbelow/Fury/Bonvillain
People may disagree, but I like '13 here. I think there are a few more arms in the back end this season than in '09.

^^^This needs to be said again.

To this point in the season, 2013 is a better ball club than 2009 was after the SEC Tournament. Asking the question at this point will greatly skew the results towards the 2009 club because:

A) The 2013 club is currently winning with little to no offense, and the casual fan finds that boring, and

B) Nostalgia. The post-season is getting under way and the 2009 club had an epic run 4 years ago.

People keep arguing that the 2009 club had the "it" factor, so they get the nod over 2013, but I think that is horseshite. The bandwagon fans jump into LSU baseball in the post-season, and those fans saw a flashy team that had tremendous power and confidence. They saw 13 HRs in 6 CWS games. They saw webgem plays throughout the field. Hell, half of them think the 23-game winning streak was the 2009 team. They saw dominant wins and that is why they favor the 2009 club.

What they didn't see was the series loss to Illinois. They didnt see the series loss to Tennessee. They weren't around for the losses to ULL, Nicholls, and Tulane.

The 2013 team is not nearly as flashy. They don't have the HR #s and they dont average nearly 8 runs/game like the 2009 version. But the 2013 club can win, and win many different ways. They may not be as top heavy as the 2009 club, but they are certainly deeper. They are the 2012-2013 San Antonio Spurs - a blue-collar team that is not overly exciting but seldomly disappoints.

At this point in both seasons, with todays bats, I have little doubt that the 2013 team would take 2 of 3 from the 2009 squad. 2009 may have had more potential, and I'd agree that they had a stretch that was as impressive as I've ever seen, but their lack of consistency was an issue. I believe 2013 finds a way to pull it out, just as they've done this entire year.

2009.

Let's see how the 2013 team plays in the postseason. That's how we judge teams at LSU.

ETA: 2009 favorite player: Mikie Mahtook
2013 favorite player: Foster the People
