Paraphrasing.. it doesn't matter who the QB is he's pretty much doomed to failure. He blames penalties, of course, for constantly being in long yardage situations instead of understanding that QB ineptitude on first and second is more often the reason and that we shouldn't be having so many third downs, period, of ANY length.

I'm thinking it explains all those passes short of the first down marker: Les has already conceded that he's not going to make it.

Excuse me if I think a Div I quarterback should be able to pick up 8 yards a good 40% of the time... at least. A good one will do much better.

I doubt that the national average on 3rd and 8 is 40%

It's probably a pretty low conversion rate. That being said, we need to run plays that give us a chance to pick it up. If it's not there then we need to trust that our QB will get rid of the ball and live to play another day. Punting isn't that bad when you have our punt team and defense.

what are the statistical differences in picking up 3rd and 8 vs. 3rd and 3?

As I watch ESPN and see all the other QB's out there, it really makes me realize how much trouble we are in...I'm not negative, I just see reality...If we can't move the ball against these stronger teams, Fla., Bama, Auburn, Ark., we will lose...Why? Defense will wear down after being on the field that long, it's that simple...this is not being negative, it is a fact...

What you are trying to say is beyond stupid. The man knows exactly what is going on. He watches it everyday. All he is doing is trying to make excuses so his quarterback does not end up on the lockeroom floor in the fetal position. Not saying it's right, but that is his mind set.

It's really hard to pick up a 3rd and 8 when you run a 6 yard route

The entire approach to the offense is disturbing. The recalcitrant refusal to adapt is disturbing. The inability to get the ball to our playmakers on the edge is disturbing. Jefferson's utter lack of development is disturbing.

Yup. D will be on the field 45 mins if this doesn't improve.

That's the message it's giving to the other team. We are conceding this drive. frick that attitude.

and why do people see this as negative? it is a fact...for every 3 and out we have, it's several series on the field for our defense and they've played a hell of a lot of minutes...how do we get up 17 against a WV, only to score 3 in the 2nd half and let them come back? Defense gets tired...i don't see how other people can't see this...

his message was "we can't afford false start penalties on 3rd and 3, because 3rd and 8 is a tougher conversion"....it's not that difficult of a concept

Every once in a while someone speaks the absolute truth on here. I completely agree. People need to shut up grit their teeth and hope the coaches get us through this unscathed.

Les throws up a lot of smoke but the theme is always there.

I believe Miles has got himself caught in a perpetual cycle of denial, and i think hes actually starting to believe the BS he spews in defending our passing game because he has to say it so often.

The more i hear from Miles, the more he seems to be entrenched in his position.

I think he's going to limit Lee's exposure in an attempt to mitigate the QB controversy.

that might be why we see so little of Lee already. it may get worse.

Hopefully Miles will wise up.

Is that really the message when he calls a 4 yards crossing route on 3rd and 8?

Which is the reason you become a ground pounding team and turn the tables on those four. Only 'Bama comes close to the style of D the Tigers are currently playing.(UF is susceptible to the run). The Tigers have a top 30 running game without even really committing to it. Line up and run Ridley,Blue,Ford, Shep and Murphy and make the other team prove it can stop you, thowing just enough to keep them honest. My guess is a top 30 running team can become a top 20 running team if that commitment is made. Given the short field the Tiger's often get from the D and S/T this would seem to be a viable option.(no pun intended)
