This seems like more of an off season topic, but it was posted on Yahoo Sports today

Les Miles "would never say 'no' to Michigan"

Apparently he was prepared to take the job after the BCSNCG in 2008, but Lloyd Carr went behind his back and offered it to RichRod, and the rest is history.

quote:

A December 2007 conference call with Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman, former Athletic Director Bill Martin and Miles lays the groundwork for the search to replace Carr.

Miles tells the Michigan president he "would never say no to Michigan," but insists he can't jump from LSU until after the Tigers' upcoming bowl game. If Michigan waits and asks in January, Miles says, "I will be your coach."

At that point, instead of entering a holding pattern, the coaching search veers improbably.

Bacon writes that it is Carr -- winner of Michigan's most recent national championship in 1997 -- who first reaches out to Rodriguez. It is Carr who calls Rodriguez to gauge his interest in becoming the Michigan coach. And that call takes place only hours after the conference call with Miles.

The article doesn't say much about this past offseason, but they may address it in the book.

If writing that helps them sleep at night good for them. Why would this not come out until now? Are there just really good secret keepers at Michigan?

MSC: Well, Les, we just couldn't put up with anymore. So, Bill, door number 2?

BM: We've done a lot of talking about you over the last year and a half. We know all about your transgressions at Michigan. We know things not even Lloyd or Bo knew about. That's one thing about wanting to come back, Les. We've got a lot or resources closeby. You bit a guy's ear off in bar fight, Les. We know you had a propensity to hit on college girls while you were here. We know that you liked to drink a lot. All of this, you know is nothing to stop you from being a viable candidate, Les. You're not running for President. And, you're entitled to make mistakes, especially when you're young. The time that you were a GA here, we really didn't let that weigh on our decision here.

Revisionist history by someone wishing to make Carr and the AD look bad (which they were perfectly capable of doing without his help). If they wanted Miles, they had another shot at him after they canned Rich Rod.

No matter how much credence you give the story, Miles comes away looking like a quality, stand-up guy (wich we didn't need Michigan to demonstrate, either).

I hold degrees from both universities, and I couldn't be happier having Miles at LSU rather than Michigan.

He may have said that in 07 but he unquestionably turned Michigan down last year

Didn't Miles and Carr have a severe dislike of one another?

I agree completely

I don't know how revisionist the story is, as it makes sense. And on the second search, I don't see why Miles would accept the job after being treated like the story describes.

From a thread a long time ago:

quote:

Stuff I was reading on the Michigan board basically said the following:

1) Les was hired as offensive line coach at Michigan by Bo Schembechler. He came from Colorado. Both he and Carr were on that staff. Carr was the DC.

2) Three years later, Bo resigned, and was replaced by Gary Moeller, who had been Bo's OC.

3) Sometime during Moeller's tenure (1990-94) Les and Lloyd had a falling out. Some people insinuated that Les had slept with Gary Moeller's wife. I don't know what that has to do with Lloyd Carr, though.

4) What is known is that when Lloyd Carr became the next coach in 95, Miles was told to look for another job, which he found as OC for Okie State. He then went on to work for the Cowboys, then returned to Okie State as HC. We know the rest.

5) The next time these two had anything to do with each other whatsoever was during the Jai Eugene recruitment. I've read that Lloyd Carr basically accused Les of dirty recruiting against him. Les apparently revealed to Jai that Lloyd Carr had Parkinson's disease or something like that, and wouldn't be UM's coach for much longer anyways.

The truth is that Jai had his own reasons for staying in Louisiana (his child) and even if Les did negatively recruit (which I doubt) it probably didn't impact Jai's decision.

Anyways....those are the stories.

I'm willing to bet most of it is fabricated.

Heard this from a few people back in 07. Miles to Michigan was a done deal. But Lloyd Carr didn't kill it. LSU to the national championship killed it. Talk to some of the boosters. They'll tell you skip was in a hanger at the BR airport with Saban negotiating for him to come back. All of the above was pretty much a done deal. But Pitt and Oklahoma made it otherwise.

Im pretty happy with the way things turned out.

I'm one of the biggest Miles suppoters there is, but I have always said (and still believe) that Les Miles was never offered a job at Michigan. Not in 2007, and not in 2010.
