Billy Cannon Jr. ,like his father was one hell of a football player. He was a state Champ in the 100 and 220. He was a big boy. And if he hadnt hurt his neck, wouldua been a damn good pro. But i understand about him wanting to do his on thing elsewhere.

Back in Bradshaw's day, all state universities had open admissions. There were no qualifications other than a H/S diploma and a body temperature of 98.6. Yes, we had to take the ACT, but no score excluded you. I think over the years, Bradshaw has used the "couldn't get in" as self deprecating humor. He was a stud QB in HS but on truth, he was a No. Louisiana country boy and Tech was close to home. Also, he played at Tech with a couple of his HS receivers.
I like the fact that he always talks up all things Louisiana anytime he gets a chance

This is correct.. and the water at QB at LSU was pretty deep at the time..

John Fourcade and Tommy Wilcox turning down LSU for Ole Miss and Bama helped get Charlie McClendon fired. Fourcade was a 1st team all-SEC QB and Wilcox was an all-American safety.

Spot on with both. As I recall Foucade was a Shaw grad and Wilcox Holy Cross and they were huge losses. What about a quarterback from Bogalusa High (I think) named Terry Davis who also started for Bear for a number of years at BAMA. Also have to agree that Travis Minor and Warwick Dunn losses to FSU were huge.

Johnny Hector was a big miss at the time. Lots of rumors about why he ended up at A&M.

not as big as the rumors about why he signed the SEC letter of intent with LSU

remember back then conferences had LOIs...

I think whole family wanted out of LA...

Wilcox was from bonnabel led bruins to title game with south lafourche - and bobby j hebert - tarpons knocked off fourcade and wilcox in quarters and finals..

Did LSU recruit Reggie Wayne? My memory is vague, but I remember him being touted as one of the fastest WRs to ever come out of HS.

half of LSU staff was at ehret all day and swarming him 3 days before signing day until he signed...

tons of westbank kids at miami in those days... and an assistant coach from westbank

John David Crow. Won the Heisman at A&M back in the 50s
LSU didn't miss out on Crow, he was kidnapped from his LSU Dorm by Bear Bryant. No kidding.

Yeah, no way does Hebert and Orgeron beat us on a neutral field, btw. One of three fumbles in the last two minutes would not have been ruled down on a neutral field.
Wilcox was never considering LSU. His Dad and our Head Coach played together at Tulane, had been on the wrong side of some 62-0 scores and TU was still a rival back then.

still one of the best games I ever saw, my man... was down on sidelines.. SL had another pretty good player on defense - maybe their best player.. got hurt in a car wreck i believe...

would have still had same refs on neutral field...

I watched tarps get robbed playing in nola a few years before...

bryant was all over wilcox...

You're probably right, bro. I'm under thirty so I'm totally ignorant about things that happened in the early eighties, seventies, sixties and before. Thats one of the reasons I started the thread. The list wasn't meant to be exhaustive; I just named some guys I knew and expected that people would name more. BTW, It's been great to get background on why some guys were and were not actual misses; I love the history. But as I mentioned in the OP, I was always more interested in who people thought would have changed an era IF WE'D SOMEHOW GOTTEN HIM TO COME HERE. I guess think of it more along the lines of what would have happened if we had the power to change a guy's mind or circumstances and get him here. Post was not meant to bash LSU's recruiting efforts on any particular player.
