Second guessing CPM in that situation is very legitimate.

Baseball coaches can be 2nd guessed from the time they turn in their starting line up till the last batter/pitcher they use.

"very legitimate" 2nd guessing....now, that's another thing.

In this case, there is nothing "very legitimate" to suggest having your 3 hole guy/Fr of the Yr/batting .380 bunt in the 4th inning of a scoreless game is the hands down the thing to do.

Yeah, he might have pushed the guy to 2nd or he might have popped it right back to the pitcher for a d/p.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the OP, but people need to chill with the "we won" crap when someone feels like talking strategy. It can be fun if some can remove the stick.

+1. That's the beauty of baseball. Every decision, even the best ones, have no more than about a 1/3 chance of being successful, so no one can ever be proven right or wrong and any argument has a rebuttal. In the end, coaches play the odds, but players play the ball.

The best thing about Skip Bertman is that he seemed to know the odds for every situation and he called every pitch, every at bat and every personnel move to maximize those odds. Over the course of.a season or a tournament, the slight increase in odds of success that he created added up to championships..

Early in the game (4th inning or so..) Laird gets on w/his infield single bringing up Bregman. I know he's the 3 hole hitter etc... but I really thought PM would have him bunt.. moving Laird over and giving Katz and Rhymes each a shot at a single and 1 run. But.. Bregman swang away and hit into a DP. Just curious.. if anyone else thought he would bunt.

He should of bunted but he didn't. I would of bunted 100% of the time in that situation. Sometimes he manages like an American League manager.

Lol have any of ywll ever played the game or even know about the game? You dont bunt the three hole, regardless of whose throwing. With a guy like Bregs that can handle the bat thats just dumb. Bunting Bregs takes the bat out of Rhymes hands in that situation. If anything you work the count and call a hit and run. But no you don't bunt here

Bregman batted .000 against this pitcher and LSU batted .214 for the game. Nothing was "hands down" at that point, but it was apparent by that point in the game that we weren't going to get to this guy until he got tired or we manufactured a run and put some pressure on him.

???? Have you ever played the game? If there are no outs, then bunting Bregman increases the chance that Katz and Rhymes, your 4 and 5, hitters get to hit with a runner in scoring position. Bregman hitting into a double play took the bat out of Rhymes' hands and sent Katz to the plate with 2 outs and the bases empty.

lol that's why you start the runner, hit and run, that simple if you want to put something on. you don't take the bat out of your three hole hitter (Bregs) just to move a runner over. Hit and run would be the right call.

I am honestly stunned at all the people in this thread suggesting we bunt Bregman in that situation. Its Alex Bregman, you don't do that. I would've been pissed at Mainieri if he did.

I'm glad Skip bunted Cresse with runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs in the bot of the 9th tie game against Stanford.....oh wait

Good post. Better than anyone else's. Nola was hot and until something changed the tone of the game, small ball was going to be the way this game was to be won. Bregman is the ONLY batter I would have considered having hit away. I imagine Maineri considered the bunt - he doesn't miss much. Good thing he doesn't have to take a poll on the Rant. There are some strange opinions on here. BTW I played baseball too. That doesn't mean one friggin thing.

Except it didn't change and we won without "small" ball

1) you are assuming Bergman can get down a successful sac bunt

2) Studies have shown that you score more runs not bunting in that situation in a tie game unless in the bot 9th or if you have Stevenson and his .170 BA up.

Bunting a guy to second is a bad move 99% of the time
