The way both pitchers were throwing you knew this was going to be a low-scoring game so... you try to scratch across a run...

Early in the game (4th inning or so..) Laird gets on w/his infield single bringing up Bregman. I know he's the 3 hole hitter etc... but I really thought PM would have him bunt.. moving Laird over and giving Katz and Rhymes each a shot at a single and 1 run. But.. Bregman swang away and hit into a DP.

Just curious.. if anyone else thought he would bunt.

To answer the OP's question--I would have bunted him.

In fact, I would have bunted every instance the leadoff batter got on base.

With hindsight, and knowing how jacked Breg was....yep. Make Gray run, and field, too..keep the pressure on..

I would have developed laird into a guy who could steal bases. How can someone that fast not be good at stealing bases?

With the way bregs swings early in the count a hit and run would have been nice but as it was already stated we won

It goes against every moral fiber in CPM's being.

The appropriate solution would be to hit and run

True, it just looks good in hindsight.

What are you, a redneck?

Yeah, I'd have bunted him over. I know what Manieri was probably doing - trying to get a hitter's count and calling a hit-and-run. But he does that so much with the meat of his order that he's kind of predictable, and pitchers just go at us. I can't knock him, though. Every call he made seemed to work - from working Gray's pitch count to the substitutions in the eighth...Bertmanesque!

How is anyone second guessing CPM moves in this game.Starting our ace against their superace, pinch hitting after Jones hit a triple. Then pinch running Foster.Well coached and well played game.

I can second guess stealing rhymes. Even though he appeared safe.

Was just asking the question. Yes, all his other moves worked. But at the time.. it was obvious runs were going to be at a premium so manufacturing a run seemed like the thing to do.

I wonder if they would have pitched to Katz. They may have walked him to set up the dp with RR coming up

Why? It didn't hurt anything and it could've paid off. Jacoby had 2 strikes on him and 2 outs. If Rhymes steals it, then Jones gets a hit, Mainieri's a genius and just stole a run. If not, Jones gets another shot at Gray the next inning. Plus you don't have Stevenson leading off

Didn't hurt anything? I think leading off with McMullen is better than Stevenson
