This is a power rating poll. This is not based on last years results.

I don't agree with all of these, but Pate is one of the best there is. Also, the JP poll uses a bunch of data to put these together. It's not just his opinion.

Does he ever explain what the data is made up of? He seems to just always say, “this isn’t what I think, this is the model” but I don’t know if I’ve ever heard him specifically explain all the data points the model uses.

LSU has some issues. Probably not a top 5 team.

My understanding of his rankings is that they give weight to the last 3-5 years, obviously last season is weighed most heavily but he is giving program standings not team standings.

With the way 2020 and 2021 went, I think 7 is perfect.

The only thing that doesn’t add up to me is Texas. They haven’t won shite.

Whatever inputs his model uses, Texas must excel at because his model was crazy high on Texas all last year as well

Is this poll as to where he would rank the teams today? Or is it projected order of finish? Is based upon returning production? If so, I can see the argument for Oregon. They return a lot of production on both sides of the ball. But then how do you juxtapose that with Alabama at No.3 who is among the bottom of the country in returning production?

"Well Alabama has earned the benefit of the doubt that no matter what they will at least be a 10 win team." Fair statement. But are you telling me Oregon (with a second year HC) and Texas (with Steve Sarkisian) has earned that same benefit of the doubt? "Well, no, but they have a lot coming back?" Ok, then why aren't they ranked ahead of Alabama?

Tennessee doesn't return a ton of production either...but they are at 9? FSU brings back a lot of production. More than Tennessee and Penn St. But they are ranked behind those two teams?

As with just about every set of rankings the author uses different logic through and sliding scales to justify their subjective opinions.

Outside of Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, and Alabama Who would you rank ahead of them and WHY?

No but they did good last year.

These things are a joke. I don’t care what he uses to determine this. It’s still opinion based because someone still decided what factors and how much to weigh them. Any poll that has Texas or Oregon above LSU is complete garbage. Both teams were trash last year and will continue to be trash.

And A&M anywhere on this list should tell you just how shitty it is. I don’t care if every player they had on the entire team was a 5 star number 1 recruit at their position. Until the actually prove something on the field, A&M should never be ranked in anything.

Nope. Because he rated A&M at all. That’s more than enough to consider him a joke.

Josh Pate salivates over Texas for some reason. Harder than wedding dick when he talks about them.

LSU would boat race Michigan and Oregon for sure

Inputting anything from 2020 and 2021 into the evaluation of the 2023 steam is foolish. LSU HAD talent in 2020 and 2021. It's just that for the first time in his tenure Orgeron had full control over the actual in game approach (rather than just staying out of the way and letting his coordinators determine the best style of play). The results were predictable. O has ALWAYS been a bad HC (look no further than the fact the 2019 COY is available to hire and NO ONE wants him), he was just fortunate enough to be on the ride of a lifetime in 2019.

That talent from 2020 and 2021, even if depleted, was enough for a coach with a proven track record of success to come in, add a few key transfers, and win immediately. If you are just looking at the records from 2020 and 2021 then you are doing lazy analysis. Their was a pretty well defined anchor on that team dragging it down. LSU paid $16M to cut it loose.

There are multiple teams that can all argue that are kind of in the same spot. LSU, FSU, USC, Penn St, Clemson could all probably make good arguments.
