This is late in the thread, but what happened with LSU's pursuit of Clancy Pendergast? This was the board's No. 1 candidate in the DC search. In theory, it seems like he would have been a great hire.

The quick answer from my perspective was that it was too obviously a really good hire for Miles to pull.

Of course he did the EXACT opposite.

Order of want based on who was reported as possible candidates:

Pendergast
Shoop
Stoops
Steele
Haley

I will say this . . . if it was between Steele and Haley, Les picked the right one.

I think we need to give Steele a chance to see if the defense can be fixed. One season with players who aren't even his type of players is hardly giving him a chance. Wait until he has full sized D-lineman and LB's to work with before making a judgement.

then he should play Chavis's (his buddy) styles defense until he does have his player...dont try and put a square peg in a round hole.

Matter of fact does Miles have anyone in his coaches tree thats successful?

Can you say Gundy is from his coaching tree?

Sounds like Gundy didn't really use the Miles formula fwiw.

That's a good point.

I'm not sure why Florida can fire Muschamp, bring in new defensive coaches, and still have a great defense, but Steele can't figure out how to do the same thing.

If there was a choke collar, he'd already be dead in my book.

no he doesnt, his offenses are balanced and I think at a school such as LSU I think he could hire a standout DC.. he has been and will be my top pick to replace miles..

Its been well documented the Gundy and Miles did not agree on things, gundy wanted to open it up a bit but he does believe in the power run game...balance is the key. Okie States Offenses are always pretty good..

Because I dont think he is that good, hes just a good "talker"... I liked chavis, he was quiet and let his results do the talking.. when he left I knew we werent looking good.. you can talk about 3rd and chavis all you want.. that SOB was a damn good DC. Miles just couldnt get an offense going to get them off the field.

Can anyone here at least agree that depth along the line & having exacly zero linebackers will get this defense killed next year?

from reading this thread it seems the majority of posters in this thread think Chavez was a better DC than Steele? or is it just that we could have done better than Steele in ya'lls opinion? Or can everyone agree that Chavez was a terrible recruiter who left the cupboard bare for the next DC whoever it would have been.

Chavis would have given up TD's & lost to MSU & Florida.

I think if LSU had a much better offense, then defensive issues wouldnt be magnified like they are.

Currently they're 28th in Total Defense in the NCAA.

6th in Total Defense in the SEC.

I think that's right. If LSU isn't going to consistently have a top offense, they absolutely always need a loaded defense. It is the Miles formula. Sadly, a top 30 defense isn't going to get it done under the Miles formula. LSU being 50th in scoring defense is just not good enough no matter what.

And Miles is an offensive coach

Chavis and quiet do not belong in the same sentence. I don't understand how Chavis' guys at A&M are struggling with his new scheme and he gets praised (A&M has a good amount of talent on the DL and S positions) and Steele is bashed for his players failing to be fundamentally sound in a new scheme when his position groups aren't as talented as they have been.

When we start to make excuses for defenses, you know shite is bad. Les Miles philosophy fails without a great defense. LSU is known for great defenses. Les method of success=
Run the ball, great defense, and great special teams execution. He recently hired a proven failure at two of those positions. Lolololololololololllolllolololol.

so we went from being DBU and DLINEU to being "respectable"

Just responding to "everything on defense is terrible" - while I might agree with a lot of the criticism, I felt like I need to challenge the assertion with raw data. Heck I've called out the secondary, myself. DL is merely a depth issue, IMHO - but our secondary - 2 choices: They've underperformed or they're overrated - pick your poison.

Not really, baw.
