Is the jury really still out on Steele?

I thought this deserved its own thread. Obviously, this season isn't over, so let's mention that caveat up front. As of today, LSU's 2015 defense gives up (for all intents and purposes) the same amount of points as the 2008 defense (15-24.3 08-24.2) and more yards than that defense (15-342.8 to 15-325.5).

Mallory and Peveto were rightly not given the benefit of the doubt. Why should Steele get a reprieve? If you think our defense is thin this year, check out that 2008 squad's defensive line. The situations are very similar.

One consideration is that Steele seems to be a 3-4 guy. That adds more questions to the mix. Why would Miles hire a guy whose philosophy doesn't mix with his personnel? No one looking at our team thought linebackers would be the strength of the team.

Steele was shite from day 1 and we knew it. No clue what Les was thinking

The defense suffers from the poor execution of the offense and special teams. Our defense plays best with a lead and poorly when from behind. We've seen flashes of how good this defense can be this season so I'm going to cut Steele some slack.

Steele was a patch up hire because we weren't gonna get a big time DC to sign on when he's not sure if his head man will be around in 2 years.

I remember when a list of candidates came out. I think the consensus was that as long as it wasn't Steele, we could be happy with it. The guy can't get it done. He is an upgrade at recruiting at least. Only problem is that our defense isn't the net plus it has been for the last decade or so.

The difference between this defense and the 2008 defense is that it seems to be more consistent middle of the roadies, rather than just getting blown the frick out in some games, and padding stats against cupcakes.

Like we consistently give up around 20 in wins, and only 30 in loses.

IN 2008 we would win games against eh cupcakes giving up only s-13 points, but we got blown the frick out by a few teams.

I'm in no shape or form a Steele supporter and didn't like the hire to begin with. With that said I also can't help but believe that some of the issues had so far this year are due to Steele and Chavis needing two separate types and sizes of players for their systems.

Our defense is talented but thin. We play great at first and when the offense can't move the ball and get first downs they wear down. But scheme wise we are much worse off than with Chavis. Just a fact.

That doesn't explain how this defense gives up more yards than 2008's defense. If you accept as a fact that 2008 had a better special teams (they did) and worse offense (debatable) these excuses don't really make much sense.

Hiring someone that can't run a competent defense with your current roster is coaching malpractice.

I think our fan base is starting to accept more mediocrity. I can say with certainty that in 2008, no one was asking that BDP and Douglas get more time. No one thought it was unfair to judge them based on one year.

I didn't think he was a good hire when he came here. Maybe a good position coach, but as DC, we could have done better.

I dont see how anyone can defend the silk curtain that looks softer than the 2013 defense by all means.

I would venture to say that I think there are two people currently on staff that would be better at coordinating the defense.

I suspect Steele was the only candidate who would accept Miles condition of hiring/keeping the coordinators Miles wanted. I think it's all the conditions Miles places on his coaches/coordinators that is responsible for most problems on the team. He's inadvertently fricked Cameron by making Cameron look like a shittier coordinator than he is because of the handcuffs.

I think Steele is a card carrying member of the good ole boy coaching network. He was the last person listed I wanted to see LSU hire. I know he's still working with players from the previous DC, but the RZ defense is pathetic

So is that on the players or the coach?

I think he would have a longer leash if the defense didn't regress so far. He has actively made us worse. Like the 1st response though - we all knew he was shite. Majority of the fanbase was just so damn excited to get Coach O.

From day 1 I said this though - As long as he lets Corey Raymond coach the DBs, Ed O coach the Dline and don't mess with the scheme we'll be fine. But he has tried to fit a square peg into a round hole by forcing us to play zone while our secondary is much more equip to play man. Yet another underwhelming bad hire by Les.

And I like Les.

Yep.

Chavis was replaceable. But Les failed to do that. I melted when he was hired, like most of this board, and we were all fricking right.
