He can redshirt and there is a very good chance CLM will allow him back if charges are limited to a misdemeanor. There will be controversy amongst fans b/c CLM will likely do what you could guess.
I could easily see JJ starting with Mett in rotation similar to previous years.
It is what it is.

JJ cannot redshirt.
Assuming he doesn't play a down this year LSU can petition the NCAA to grant him a red shirt year at the conclusion of the season. The NCAA is the final say on whether or not its granted. Since he broke no NCAA rules he would likely be awarded the additional year.
I, for one, hope this doesn't happen.

Is there not precedence for something like this?
What were the charges with others who were dismissed from team, such as Derrick Odom, Kyle Anderson?

You don't have to petition the ncaa.. If he doesn't play a down and has his redshirt available he gets to come back, end of story.

I think he gets reinstated at some point this season but still doesn't start.

My thoughts are that JJ is probably a good guy that maybe made a mistake, maybe. He probably will not play this season. He should transfer and play his final year with a team that needs immediate help at QB, do his best and see what the far future holds. I assume he would not have to sit out a year again.

Clearly.
But Les also has a team to run, and knows showing favoritism isn't the best way to keep a locker room intact.

But would the NCAA let him considering the circumstances?

Do you people not want an experienced backup available if for some reason Mett goes down?
Having Jefferson as a backup next year could be a HUGE positive if in fact things work out that way (not saying he does get a redshirt or anything)

I think many fear that if he comes back he won't be a backup, and we potentially have one of the best QB prospects we've had in quite some time waiting in the wings.

ah true, but I guess I would trust the coaches to put the most talented players who give us the best chance to win on the field

I thought* *i admit i am clueless* that after age 21 you cannot REDSHIRT.. or atleast you DO have petition..

I see alot of 'what I want to happen next year' @ QB but not what JJ wants. If red shirted he will not sit on the LSU bench. He needs to start somewhere his final year to have any shot at a career in football.

There is no "letting." You have 5 years to play 4, end of story. It is only up to the school whether they will allow the player on the team for that year.
I predict he will miss this whole year and finish his senior year at a small school, like Southern or Nicholls.
