Here are two of las top talent from recent years. Ludwig and derenbecker. Nothing against those guys, but the best athletes play football here.

Reminds me of a game show.

The 2000s have been a very underrated era of LSU basketball. In the ten years between 2000 and 2009, LSU did the following:
1. One Final Four
2. 2 sweet 16s
3. 3 SEC Titles
4. 4 SEC West Titles
5. 4 SEC POY awards
6. 5 NCAA tourney appearances
Unfortunately the bad years, were really bad. But I think most agree LSU is headed in the right direction with CJJ.

Thus was Johnny Jones' first season and he didn't have much talent to work with (thanks Trent). He got here too late to have any significant impact on last years recruiting class, but still managed to grab a JUCO transfer (that was ruled in eligible but will help next year), another JUCO transfer who played very well, and a graduate transfer who contributed.
He got the team playing very good, but we didn't have enough depth to close out tough games. We were on the bubble for the NIT, which is better than anyone expected going into the season.
We have a top 5 recruiting class for next year, and JJ continues to hit the recruiting trail hard for the future.
The program is moving in the right direction, but still far from the heights of the glory days.

so this is the season you decided to bitch about LSU basketball? When we're obviously on the way back up?

Gotta love this board. I recall the number of fans thoroughly upset when Jones was hired...even though most were impressed by his press conference.

...been out of the country for awhile , eh ?

Obviously we've only been to the postseason twice since the Final Four run, but you can't say that there aren't signs of improvement coming.

quote:I think y'all are off base ripping this guy. I don't think he said anything trashing Jones or the team this year (other than pointing out that we are not "back" yet, which I can't imagine anyone disputing). He seemed to just be asking how far down we had fallen over the years (in other words, how much rebuilding does Jones have to do to finish the job and get us "back"). He flat out said he hadn't followed basketball much in the last several years and was likely just looking for input on how far we are from where we want to be from someone who actually has been following the team closely over the years.

Unfortunately, it seems Elleshoe and a couple of others* were the only ones that weren't scouring the boards for an excuse to flame somebody whether they deserved it or not.
*apologies if there are other decent posters who actually gave answers later in the thread that I have not reached yet

To the OP:
Trent Johnson happened. Specifically, he totally failed to recruit the players needed to compete at a decent level, much less what LSU was accustomed to.
Perhaps he was at the wrong place; he came from Stanford. LSU isn't Stanford, and you won't go after the same type of player. That might have worked at Vanderbilt, but not here.
In any rate, Johnny Jones seems to know what type of player would come to LSU, and thus he's signed a top class. We should return to the level Brown had us at (and really, Brady too- take away the sanctions and we're in the postseason a lot with him too).

I really have quit following basketball for a long time
It's been mediocre since the 90's, even w/ Dale. Ups and downs have come. We've had some competitive teams that played well in the tourny, but for the most part LSU basketball has been a good year sprinked in every now and then. Expect one next year.

Judging from the performance that the Southern Jaguars just had against Gonzaga, looks like LSU is not the best team in the city of Baton Rouge right now.
