Your definition is different than mine I guess.
We have the potential to be an elite program. To me, we are a sleeping giant. It might take the athletic department spending more money, getting a new coach, filling the arena, shutting down the state borders, etc. But I believe we can do all of those things.
We were at that level with Dale Brown. There was excitement in the program, the arena was packed, we were winning. Historically, we're a top 3 basketball program in the SEC. We were the major rival for Kentucky during Brown's tenure. We were the team that challenged (and beat) them the most.
We may be in a deep sleep. shite, maybe a coma. But we have the potential to be an elite program.

I've never seen a team jack up more ill advised, off balance, no numbers shots in my life. And combine that with post guys forcing shots because they think they won't see the ball again. You're best players are in the post on this team, yet our tiny guards are shooting shooting fade away threes from midcourt.

We don't have that good of players, to be honest.
It starts there.
It starts there.

This is the year to make the move. The program can't afford to wander through the wilderness much longer. I thought Trent had done enough when the team was 17-10, 7-6 but this collapse has shown me all I need to see. There's no motivation. Coaches have been fired for much less. 17-14, 7-9 after the Sec tourney 1st round loss isn't going to cut it.

I believe we can too. That's why I said we CAN be elite. We were a sleeping giant in football before Nick Saban, but everything was basically in place besides the right coach. That is a sleeping giant to me.
We have the potential to be elite, but that doesn't make us a sleeping giant IMO. Many SEC teams can say the same as us right now. I don't think all of those are sleeping giants either.
I think we agree here. But with our lack of fan support and admin support, I don't think we are a sleeping giant. We have potential though...

With 5 of top 6 players returning, a new coach will have a decent nucleus to build on.

We can be a tourney team next season with the new life a coach will pump into the program.

Exactly, alleva isn't exactly a great AD

Alleva will not release him because Alleva picked him

Nope, not with the current resouces and money we put toward basketball. Can we be an elite program? Yes, but not at this same level. The Admin will have to dump more resources for us to be. Can we be elite? Yes. Are we a current sleeping giant? No.
is there a link somewhere that shows how much we spend on basketball?

BB03 can give you one. It was in a thread Wednesday night. LSU basketball is the 101st most profitable program out of every NCAA sport. We can put more money into basketball with only money from basketball profits.

I'm not really blown away by any of the names I've seen thrown around either

We have so much in-state talent that we have been letting get out. On top of that, there is no major competition within the state.
That's where other SEC teams can't say the same. Just like football, we have that huge advantage. We shut down the borders, then we started to win SEC championships.
I think we can do the same in basketball. Almost all of our best players from the last 3 SEC championship teams were from Louisiana. So think of what we could do if we keep ALL of the great kids from Louisiana in state.
Of course, we need to get fans in the seats first to make LSU a more desirable destination for these kids. That's why we need a vibrant coach with lots of intensity and positive energy. After that, he needs an assistant with roots here.
Trent Johnson is about as motivating as a doorknob and our head assistant was born in California and played at Nevada.

We are not a sleeping giant in basketball. I think we can be a top level program if we wanted to be, but we really don't. TJ cannot bring in top recruits and recruit with the big boys with an empty arena. LSU basketball is going to be a slow building process...
With the right coaching hire the fan base can be re-energized. Trent is a dead fish.

Fans don't show up because Brady alienated the fans.. Trent is a dead fish.. Yeah whatever. If LSU would consistently win people would show up even if Hitler was our coach.

I agree completely. LSU basketball needs a salesman as a coach. Dale and Skip were great at it. Trent is a great guy, but isn't that type. Hell, look at the energy Pearl brought to Tennessee. He was a Dale Brown-lite to me. Great energy guy, great salesman (which made him a great recruiter). That's what this program needs...someone to bring the excitement.

He doesn't win, he doesn't recruit, and he has no personality=dead fish.

That's for 2009-2010. We spent $4,195,336. We brought in $6,767,009. Profit of $2,571,673.
However, LSU Basketball wasn't one of the top 100 most profitable programs in 2010-2011. LSU football was 4th most profitable, though.
I'd assume our spending this year was similar to what it was in 2009 or 2010. The profit might not be the same, though.
