Herb Tyler explains why LSU football has struggled to find a QB

quote:
Under Les Miles, Tyler said LSU did a poor job of adequately developing quarterbacks. Be it Brandon Harris or Anthony Jennings or any of their predecessors, Tyler said he thinks the leashes were so short and the opportunities were so sparse for these guys because their coaches knew they hadn’t properly prepared them to play quarterback against major college competition.
In Tyler’s mind, there’s one way to fix that: opportunity. No one quarterback, from incumbent starter Danny Etling to Harris vying for his old job to any of the players behind them on the depth chart, should get all the coaches’ focus...
One of the major puzzle pieces Tyler said he thinks is going unplayed with is freshman Lindsey Scott Jr...
“Brandon came in with everything on his shoulders,” Tyler said. “His talent speaks for itself. Yeah, he can throw the ball, and he can make certain passes, and he can run a little bit. But you know what? You’ve got to put your team in a certain situation. … I think Brandon Harris can be successful. (But) I think his time here at LSU is probably done.”
The way Tyler sees it, Etling was given a chance to survive and thrive because the fans put no expectations on him. Harris was expected by the coaches and fans to be LSU’s savior from Day 1. That might just be a product of the monster created by modern-day recruiting. Quarterbacks are either expected to come in and fix everything or be banished to Elba, never to be seen or heard from again.
Those same high-risk, high-reward expectations follow LSU’s newest crop of quarterbacks: early-enrollee Lowell Narcisse and committed 4-star Myles Brennan....
_______________________
Still, everything comes down to the way new offensive coordinator Matt Canada coaches up these guys. And, from what he’s seen on tape, Tyler thinks Canada is the right man for the job.

Spot on!

Well, maybe not spot on, but he's in the zip code.

I think the writer could have done a better job with this sentence.

You can't deny that Etling got a much longer lease and less pressure to perform than any of the other starters since Mett
He did a good job given the situation, but in no way should he have that job on lock down based on his performance last year. Let the best man win the job.

This makes no sense whatsoever.
I appreciate Herb's service as a player, but these observations are not helpful.

'the fans put no expectations on etling'
With the circumstances and IMO, he was under a very high power microscope. I think it was BH who started without many expecations. I remember things like, '...if he can just keep from turning it over...'

Definitely agree on the longer lease, and that DE has done a good job. The competition can only make them all better.

I think the high expectations comes from being such a highly recruited guy. When you look at how bama sort of managed a very young Jalen Hurts, it shows how Saban protected the kid, while bringing him along. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Bama's pass only approach. Their offense was limited. But you gotta imagine this kid's confidence being very high going into the next season.

So the reason LSU hasn't had a QB is because Miles/Cam didn't coach them up and because huge expectations were placed on the kids? We already knew that those two shitbirds were doing frick-all for QB development. And guess what? No shite if you start at a premier program like LSU, there's going to be a lot of pressure to be good. And don't tell me anything more about Harris. There are middle school QBs that are more accurate on simple throws he routinely missed. In 2015, Harris had three games in which he completed less than 34% of his passes, and four games in which he failed to pass for more than 90 yards. He isn't a good QB, and won't play next year unless there's a catastrophe. Etling is average at best. There HAS to be a wide open competition, and I do agree with Herb that Scott might surprise people.

Ignore that. The article is about the lack of development, and competition.

Whitey trying to keep the black man down. I do agree there was very little development under the old regime. The race card pulled though, come on man

Agreed. Competition. Competition. Competition.

R u kidding me. The quarter back we had been starting and had been grooming for 2 years couldn't complete a pass 5 yard from scrimmage, had no idea with regards to reading defenses, and according to our coaching staff couldn't learn but 7-8 plays and so our offense was so limited. Eting when given time changed all that by completing passes that were open and obviously knowing and understanding way more of the play book than Brandon whom had started a whole year prior to his demotion. I'm all for the best man getting the job but Etling starts as the clear number one!

Les Miles, due to being scared shitless of turnovers since 2008.
