It doesn't bother me anymore. It's humorous, and part of his charm. He calls it as if he is calling a tv game and it has to be instantaneous with the action rather than taking the benefit of doing a radio broadcast and calling the action a couple seconds after it happens.

My favorite Hawthorne moment was a reg season conference basketball game at Mississippi State about 4 or 5 years back. We we're up 2 with 5 or 6 seconds left and State was inbounding at half court. His call was literally,

"Augustus to inbound for the Bulldogs at midcourt..."

<<8 or so seconds of dead air>>

"TIGERS WIN!! TIGERS WIN!!"

I turned off the radio and laughed for a half hour. It was classic JH.

I swear, You JH haters are some miserable mother frickers.

You mean to tell me you sit near me? I'm at the foul pole with excellent vantage point for those hits.
Looked foul to me too. Watched replay on news at home before I could fully accept/enjoy the win. It was indeed fair but that's why umps are paid and we're just fans.

That lovable SOB has done me that a LOT over the years.

I don't get it. I like the way he has excitement just like the rest of us. Yea he said foul ball but then saw the ump signal fair and went nuts like most of us did.

I didn't have any problem visualizing what was going on. If anything he made it easier to imagine how close it was.

Jim has made some big screw ups and has his quirks but I wouldn't trade him for any other local SEC announcers

I sat on the 3rd base side as well. I thought it was a pretty easy fair call, not really close.

Correct. I've said repeatedly I love Jim Hawthorne, and I seriously doubt he would be nearly as sensitive as some in this thread. Some of the knee jerk reactions are just embarassing.

I agree. Lots of those other guys wait for the play to happen and then summarize it. Jim has always tried to explain it as it happens, and I appreciate that. It paints a better picture. With that said, mistakes on close plays like that can happen. "Pass over the middle, caught!, no dropped" is common, but to be honest that's how I think as I'm watching those plays. And "foul, no fair ball!" is exactly what I thought last night as I watched.

Now with all that said, I do think Jim's overall quality has gone downhill over the past few years, and it's probably time for him.

He may make some questionable calls, but it just won't feel right listening somebody other than Hawthorne call the games on the radio. Hate to see him go.

You must be psychic then. At no point did Hawthorne say which line the ball was on….3rd base or 1st base.

Nuff said . . . love Jim! Radio broadcasts will not be the same without him.

Go to a game...watch how many people in the crowd stand up on ANY long fly ball. I don't see why anyone ever makes fun of this when they do it themselves. I know I have and have had friends that have yelled "that's gone" numerous times and the ball was caught.
