I'll take JH over fricking monotone Hannigrif any day of the week. Dude sounds like he is constantly contemplating suicide.

Hannagriff can be monotone at times. How anyone could perfer Hawthorne to him though is straight up baffling to me.

I dont know if he's telling the truth or not but are you under some assumption that half innings cant take 13+ minutes?

Meh, you're right, it's not impossible for a half an inning to last that long but I still stand by my prediction that he's full of shite...

He might be. Hawthorne is extremely bad about updating the situation though.

NOPE our misery has lasted since 1983! From his first football game he has yet to learn the rules, referees signals, or develop any common knowledge of football....and baseball maybe worse!!!!

in a football game whenever he says, "there's nobody gonna catch him!" somebody gonna catch him about 75% of the time.

Or his "wiiiiiiide open" when the opponent catches a pass regardless of coverage.

He also doesn't give score update enough throughout the game. I listened to him once and it was 13 minutes before I knew who was winning. I timed it.

This is my biggest complaint about him.

From my seat with the poors in the right field bleachers I saw exactly what Hawthorne saw.

I love his anticipation and his excitement. He so quickly corrected what his vision told him..,that it was foul.

Mostly everyone I saw thought foul for a moment too. Thus, he was calling the game as a fan. I'm gonna miss him. Maybe just for his fandom and the nostalgia.

ETA: silly typos. Lol.

For those who missed it. I think this pretty much sums up the man's career in the last 15-20 years.

I was watching the game at Georges and some of the old timers had head phones on listening to Hawthorne and hilarity ensued after that play.

I love Hawthorne and particularly on baseball.

It's going to be very hard to get a guy like him again. He is old school.

I like that he says the first thing that pops in his mind--he is just like us. When it came off the bat I thought it was foul. The fact that he said "foul" then "fair" only contributes to the mental image for radio listeners to just how close the ball was to being foul.

If I have to hear him in pre-game say:

"Next up, we'll talk to Ellick Bregman"

or:

"Tomorrow night starter, Ellick Lange"

I will stick an ice pick in my temple.

So you're the one.

Baseball is by far his worst sport. He's pretty good with basketball. Frustrating at times with football. But baseball... he's just terrible.

None of us are paid to do the job he is paid to do. I can't perform surgery either but if a surgeon cut off the wrong leg I can damn sure say he is a shitty surgeon. Hawthorne's job is to convey to a radio listener what the flying frick is happening. He's not good at it. At all. That's not "hating". It's just fact. It's great he loves LSU. So do thousands of other people. It doesnt make them qualified to call games.
