He obviously changed somewhere along the line. That interview was definitely a clue.
He wasn’t dumb at lsu. He was pretty much a model citizen and would give pretty normal and coherent interviews.
But once he got drafted to the Raiders and started abusing codeine and not taking his film study seriously, he became a pretty dumb nfl qb.

Being drafted by the Raiders killed JR.

literally couldn't read a playbook. Certainly couldn't read or understand defenses
There’s a reason he always had to be rolled out to one side of the field, he couldn’t see an entire field or make a progression
Reminds me of a more recent QB

JR was a gamer, led like 12 4th quarter game winning drives at LSU

Bert Jones could throw it a country mile.
I was wondering when his name would enter this thread.
“ In 1990, Jones participated in the first NFL Quarterback Challenge. He finished first in the retiree category and third in the regular competition (The regular competition taking the top three finishers from the alumni competition and adding them to the regular field of current quarterbacks). Given his strong performance, Bobby Beathard, then the general manager of the Chargers, wanted Jones to come out of retirement, but Jones was 38 at the time and chose not to try a comeback.
Longtime scout Ernie Accorsi is quoted as saying that if Bert Jones had played under different circumstances, he probably would have been the greatest player ever. John Riggins has been quoted as saying Jones was the toughest competitor he has ever witnessed. On the eve of Super Bowl XLII, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, in discussing his choices for the greatest quarterbacks of all time, described Jones as the best "pure passer" he had ever seen.
I still see Bert, he has a golf tournament for Cystic Fibrosis every year, but Covid has slowed that down. Bert still looks like he could play.

I remember he once ran 2 yards out of bounds and then threw the ball away for a big loss

A good friend of mine in the coaching profession went to a Raiders practice. Suppose to start at 7, much of the staff wasn’t there before 8’ish, some past 9. Most looked like they had been drinking all night.

Yep … no list would be complete without the Ruston Rifle.

OBJ catching kickoffs with one hand (against UGA, I think).

Yess this needs to be talked about more. That was just as impressive as his famous catch against the cowboys in my book
OBJ caught a kickoff with one hand against Georgia then later that game muffed a punt that crushed LSU’s momentum. Incredible ends of the spectrum in one game.

JR had the best arm to ever play the game. Bert is right up there. I remember going watch the Manning Pass Academy routes on air with the college/NFL guys. JR was throwing 80-90 yard bombs like it was pats-n-go warmup drill.
Peyton just talked about that this year on one of his broadcast. Tried finding it to link, but couldn’t.

Bert Jones wasn’t called “the Rustin Rifle” for nothing. He threw bullets.

Bradshaw and Doug had huge arms.

Too bad he didn’t catch the ball when it mattered in that game. Lol.
Oops Boat beat me to it.

Go back and watch his games at LSU. Everything was half field simple reads. Even if guys were covered, his arm was so good that he could make a lot of plays. Also didn’t hurt that his receivers were Bowe, Doucet, Davis, Lafell, and Skylar.

I saw Bradshaw set a new national high school javelin record at Bolton HS in Alexandria probably 1966. 242 yards I think. He never gets the credit for the talent he had.
