Gameday traffic & parking

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse… Saturday was a horrendous failure.
Getting to the stadium took hours… There were people parked in reserved parking spaces that did not have a pass for the reserved space… Leaving took another few hours… There were several folks that did not get home until 1 or 2 AM.
There needs to be an emergency all hands on deck meeting with LSU and law-enforcement to make certain it never goes this bad again.

I'm convinced the cops and the contraflow all just make it worse.

Speaking of….I was dumbfounded by the lack of cops actually directing traffic versus letting traffic lights run normally. That’s crazy.

The feces show is usually south of campus. Maybe more people should park where they can head north after a game?

I didn't go to the game, but I wonder if you had many more people than usual on campus loitering (it's not "tailgating" if you aren't actually going to the game) given both schools were located in BR?
That said, the cops directing traffic (or not) are often lazy. There have been countless games where I have been coming in to campus on the River Road (from downtown) in bumper to bumper traffic, only to get to the intersection of River Rd and Skip Bertman Dr. and see 3-4 BR City police just sitting by their cars hanging out without a care in the world. The problem is you'll have people trying to turn left on Skip Bertman having to wait until northbond traffic on River Rd (i.e. people who were on campus to tailgate, but are now leaving because they aren't going to the game) clears. That is a 1-2 minute wait for each car that wants to turn left, which incrementally increases the backup. An officer could be directing that traffic...but they rarely are (though they do a better job exiting the game)
That also highlights another problem. If you arrive to campus about an hour or so before kickoff the hayfield lots are often closed because they are full. However, while they were full when they were closed, they steadily start to empty out to some degree because of all the loiters who are now leaving campus because they aren't going to the game. That leaves open, unavailable spots, that otherwise could be used. But since people can't access them, it creates more traffic because they have to go elsewhere.

How? Everything is herded into the Nicholson corridor.
Only way to fix it is to open up tailgating on campus like it used to be

Been going on for years nothing will change

People bitch about the University trying to restrict the number of people on campus, then they bitch about the inevitable result of not restricting the number of people on campus.
Yes, the University still doesn't know WTF its doing WRT to traffic and parking, even after all these years. Yes, BRPD is either in over it's head or deliberately staging a work slowdown . But as long as LSU gameday is allowed to be a free fall festival for all of SELA, this is going to happen.
Want to fix traffic and parking? Require a game ticket or student/staff/faculty ID for occupants of all cars entering campus. Problem solved.

Who bitched about this? IIRC, this all started as a way for Alleva to make money off of parking and tailgating spots.

I'm fine with paying a few hundred over the course of the season so I don't have to get there at the crack of dawn to fight for a parking spot. YMMV.

If you put a little effort there were always places on campus you could park without issue. We used to park behind the Agg building when I was a student. Hop on highland to Parker to acadian and I was usually back at my apartment within an hour.
This only became a problem when they installed the gates. It’s also permanently changed tailgating on campus. And not for the better.

Amen Jim, I've been saying that for years. At a tailgate I know of 1 in 20 people are going to the game. If I have an extra ticket and offer it up their are no takers.

How about paying LSU $ 500/season to park, getting to the lot at 1-2 pm and being told there are NO spaces left?

It may have been terrible.. but this is not why.. I went to the LSU/MSU game about 5-6 years ago.. paid MSU $20 to park in the middle of campus because I did not want to try to find parking.. took over 4 hours just to get out of the parking lot.. when we finally got out, I saw the reason.. there was a 4 way stop that was not controlled by anyone, cars were turning all 4 ways..Did not get back to the hotel in Winona by 55 until after 4am

There is no money to be made do they ignore the situation.

So you want people to pay more to A. Deter people. B. Have to pay to get stuck in similar traffic?
BTW just don’t be in a rush. Head back to the tailgate and chill out for 30 -45 minutes then cruise out. Everyone piles up. Blah blah blah

This is what I thought about the parking pass I had Saturday. But arriving about 2 hours before kickoff was not nearly good enough. After sitting in traffic for hours and almost to the start of the second quarter I still had not even got through the campus gates. I was at a standstill and had not moved hardly an inch for the last 30 minutes at that point. I was able to make a left on a side street off of Highland at that point so I just went home. That paid parking permit was not a bit of help at all. The only 2 police officers I saw the whole time were just 2 of them leaning on barricades that had Lakeshore drive CLOSED!!!

That was as bad as I've seen it even for the big SEC games. I'm hoping it was just an anomaly because everyong was driving cars from nearby.

I posted this in other threads, but I'm still shocked that they had all of the people in the levee lot being blocked in by an empty cop car for over an hour.
Finally, some guy wised up and threw the barricade next to the cop car into a ditch and opened the gate for us. Some drunk broad with no shoes was directing traffic.
When the cop finally showed up, and tried to close the gate, he had a near riot on his hands, and finally gave up.
