I think Chicken assumed a model that follows the current BCS approach and applied it retroactively, i.e., unless the "NC" defeated #2 ranked team, the title is suspect. It's just an approach and doesn't benefit us any more than the next team.
IMO, pitting the "two best" teams in a final game approach is flawed. The goal is for one team to demonstrate its superiority on the field to the exclusion of the most other teams. That takes a moment to digest but that's what the Super Bowl does. It doesn't necessarily match the two best teams since they could conceivably be in the same conference. Rather, the eventual champ can always claim that they demonstrated their superiority to the exclusion of the most other teams.
