Verbal Contracts are valid

That depends on the type of contract and duration of the agreement, etc.

Hire the new coach and quietly sue Chavis if it is a strong case

There is nothing petty about enforcing a contract.

and the buyout ended at midnight, per the contract

I thought that it said the offer letter extended his contract through 2015?

Supposedly there was a signed memorandum of undertaking agreeing to the extension with Chavis and LSU. If this is true Chavis or A&M (on Chavis behalf) could be payng 400k to LSU......

Did Chavis' contract expire at midnight? And if so, did Chief sign with the Aggies before then? If so, then Alleva's claim has some merit. If not, he's gonna look awfully stupid standing there with his dick in his hand.

He wouldn't find out if he didn't research the issue. I'd fight to get that $400,000 if I thought I had a case.

Alleva is not getting the $400k back. He played hardball, was a dick about it

Alleva was the dick in this negotiation?

ETA: Chavis was talking out both sides of his mouth to both the head coach and recruits. He laid an egg in the bowl game then skipped town. Who's the dick?

This!

Guys, frick Chavis......he's not the best in the business, period. We hd some woefully painful defensive performances in his tenure. And that was with plenty of money and facilities etc.
He was a solid enough dc and tried to play LSU for more money.
Im not saying alleva is the best either. I am saying him coming out publicly and staying LSU's position is a telling. sign.....all you wanna be experts on contract laws need to stop. No one on this board know shite as it pertains to this situation.
My shock would be if ANYONE knew he had decided he was leaving and let him spend one more second around our program and players and recruits!
