Only in limited situations are they valid.

I just want to be sure, because all the reports before assumed it, but did the 400k buyout actually expire at midnight even though he had a year left on the deal?

It seems that anyone who wrote an article assumed it did, when I am thinking it may have been extended just like the contract was.

Why? It's in the contract...He owes it...there's NOTHING he can do to stop us from going after it, suing his arse if necessary.

This is Becky clef to me LSU wasn't at all fighting to keep him. His pay raise at aTm almost equals his buyout!

LOLOLOL

Except that the clause expired before Chavis signed anything...if he's signed anything as of yet.

Alleva seems clueless that Chavis felt disrespected because Alleva speak to Chavis directly during the negotiations.

Apparently sending assistants memos /responses.

at least that was reported by someone

who knows

Verbal Contracts are valid

Neither Chavis or Sumlin have come out and said anything, so good luck proving a verbal contract exists.

Uhhh..... "verbal contract"?

They'd have to prove that an actual agreement was in place between the parties before last night.

I'm betting it's all moot anyway. A&M likely ponies up to make it go away. They've got the cash.

Did Chavis' contract expire at midnight? And if so, did Chief sign with the Aggies before then?

If so, then Alleva's claim has some merit. If not, he's gonna look awfully stupid standing there with his dick in his hand.

Did you miss the part where he says this is based on the opinion of LSU's legal counsel?

It is transparent that he already agreed to the deal before and even notified LSU. Any delay was simply to avoid the buyout. It will be an interesting interpretation of the contract language by the court.

Exactly. I doubt his agent would put him in a buyout situation if it truly expired last night.

They are reporting that Chavis told Miles in his hotel on December 30th it was over and he had already agreed to go to A&M. Without more information and purely speculating on its validity, that has some major implications here.

They can prove it if he did inform everyone after the game

This sounds like face saving from Alleva.
Even when you can prove a contract these types of restraint of trade clauses, involving a man's personal labor, are very difficult to enforce.
If this is round 2 for Alleva, he loses it, too.

Well, if he would informed EVERYONE after the game, then more people would've been talking about it.

If anything, I could see it being settled for a certain amount, which A&M would pay for Chavis.

The players talked about it plenty. I bet the administration doesn't want to acknowledge it so it looks worse on him than them.

I am going to revise my earlier post. Yes, verbal contracts are valid in some circumstances. However, legal counsel for the Ath. Dept. is indicating that the letter of agreement in effect extended all parts of the contract through Dec 2015, and is therefore claiming that the $400,000 is owed on that basis. Can't really say without reviewing the contract and of equal importance the extension letter. If Chavis signed off on the letter, LSU might have a valid claim. The question is whether or not they pursue it. If they do, it will be problematic for Chavis as jurisdiction is in Louisiana. Then again, aTm might just say frick it and get their checkbook out. If the latter happens, I would suspect that Sumlin might be on a shorter leash than he bargained for in terms of pressure to produce in order to justify the extra expenditure. If it was my call and there were sufficient grounds, I would pursue in order to set precedent on this type of thing so that perhaps the next person that pulls this shite thinks long and hard before he does, or at the very least has agreed to some sort of settlement on his way out.
