Collins had a great three and half games, but let's slow down on comparing him to Kevin Faulk. Faulk had more rushing yards in SEC history than anyone except Herschel. He graduated with more all-purpose yards than anyone. He was #1 in SEC history in total touchdowns, a record since surpassed.

Faulk still holds the LSU record for most all-purpose yards, most TDs, most rushing yards, most yards/game, and best yards/carry. He AVERAGED 5.3 yards a carry for four years.

Kevin Faulk was f'n awesome. He was an All-American as a sophomore. Let's not compare a guy who had three great games to him. Faulk had four great seasons.

Faulk ran for 1000 yds for 4 straight seasons (by today's stats, bowl game totals didn't factor into season totals back then), when everyone knew he was options 1 and 2 on offense.

Instead of Marcus Dupree, it should have been Cecil Collins on the ESPN 30 for 30: The Best that Never Was

Plus one of, if not the best high school career ever in LA. Cecil ran for 3079 yards during his senior season in HS.

This debate isnt who had the better career, its who was a better talent. Cecil was clearly a better talent, but was a knucklehead who couldnt get on the field because of his issues off it.

Faulk keeps his Ducks lined up and has a good College Career

Saying Faulk had a good college career is like saying that Napoleon was a decent military strategist.

Collins was by far the best RB I've ever seen live. If he stayed healthy he would be in the Bo/Herschel argument as far as college goes.

Instead of Marcus Dupree, it should have been Cecil Collins on the ESPN 30 for 30: The Best that Never Was

Good comparison.

Marcus Dupree in high school: As a senior year in 1981, he rushed for 2,955 yards and scored 36 touchdowns. He finished his high school career with 7,355 rushing yards with an 8.3-yards-per-carry average. Dupree scored 87 touchdowns total during his playing time in high school

Cecil Collins High school:he amassed 99 touchdowns and 7,833 yards over his high school football career including 3079 yards during his senior season. Leesville was the 4A state runner-up that year and Cecil was selected as Louisiana's very first "Mr. Football".

Very similar careers, but Dupree lasted long enough in college to make a name for himself. With a full year Collins would have been just as good.

Edit: Faulk was no slouch in High school either:Faulk helped his team win the 1992 State Championship (Class 5A). In high school, Faulk rushed for 4,877 yards on 603 carries (8.1 yards per carry). He also had 7,612 all-purpose yards and 89 touchdowns.[1] He was twice chosen as Louisiana's Most Valuable Player (Class 5A). He was also given All-American Honors by USA Today and Parade.

Cecil was by far the most talented football player to ever attend LSU. However, one needs more than supreme talent to be a great player. Intellect, discipline and balance are extremely important as well. Kevin Faulk was a great talent who possessed these other gifts as well. As a complete package, Kevin Faulk was a better football player both in college and professionally than Cecil was able to achieve.

"Most talented"? That's quite a statement. Cannon is first to come to mind that might surpass. But old-timers I've talked to compared Collins to Jimmy Taylor in many ways. There was a sort of "anger" in the way both ran that very few have. Of course, in Collins' case, given his other issues that later came to light, that might be understandable..

The only debate is about talent alone and that goes to Collins.

But you are correct-Faulk wins in any other measure and its not even a question.

What is so clear cut about Collins being the most talented?

People are acting like there is no doubt he was the greatest back ever at lsu. It's just ridiculous.

Not probably. Cecil was one of the best RB's I've ever seen until that Vandy asshat broke his leg.

He had a very rare combo of speed and power. That's why people keep bringing up comparisons to Bo and Herschel. Similar styles that can't be taught, only God given.

Cecil Collins was an incredibly gifted runner with ultra-elite talent in that regard. He accomplished next to nothing. Faulk was a less gifted but still outstanding runner

Faulk was still a very gifted runner. He just didn't have the size or power. However, he was extremely illusive, and this allowed him to be an even bigger factor in other areas of the game.

So in other words, while Collins may have been the better true running back, I would argue that Faulk was a better overall football player.
