A lot of people say Coach O is stupid, but his comments on why he failed at Ole Miss say otherwise. Stupid people don't learn from their mistakes and tend to place blame on others. He's at least very mature.

He got Mike Wallace, Greg Hardy, the Jerrys, McCluster, and Oher on the team for Houston Dale Nutt to benefit from. Cut didn't leave much talent behind, and O was kind of insane at the time.

Wasn't he the one that brought Brent Schaeffer over from JUCO and tried to build an offense around him?

I assumed that was one of the "mistakes" Oregeron was referencing when he talked about messing with QBs when he had no idea what he was doing.

No idea how he will do here but Nutt went to the cotton bowl with coach O's recruits. Freeze was on Coach O's staff and credited that system with his success. Finally, usc people said he would probably have gotten the head job had they not lost to UCLA in the final game. Time will tell but it's understandable why LSU is comfortable with him taking over right now.

Its pretty much all been said. He stated that he didnt delegate responsibility because he wanted to micromanage and one thing no one else has mentioned yet, he led on that he was too hard on the other position groups like hes always been with the D-line and that tough love like that isnt the best recipe for those types of players(read, soft and egotistical).

I really wanted to post so I could say...
The big take away was that he said that he learned from his mistakes and thats why he was successful at USCw. So hes the exact opposite of what we just unloaded(Less Smiles). Hes adaptable and willing to learn and change.

it was a disaster with coach O. He wanted to fight everyone; encouraged players to fight at practice. He cursed at fundraisers. His wife constantly bickered with her neighbors. There was no discipline on the team. Ole Miss definitely not bottom feeders as they had plenty of success in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Had success in the 90's with Tuberville then the Eli years with Cutcliffe and now wit Freeze. Some of you forget how bad LSU was for a stretch in the 80's and 90's.

IMO, LSU can attract a higher profile coach than coach O. He'll have a chance to prove himself and I do believe he has changed as a coach and as a person than what he displayed in Oxford.

Long time ago./ nice insight. I remember the USC situation and he did an outstanding job turning things around. That team would've been 3-9 4-8 if O doesn't take over

Didn't read the whole thread so I apologize if it was said already. I think his lack of success was due to the recruits he inherited. Most notable is he admitted in the Interim HC interview that (paraphrased) he made mistakes as a first time HC in wanting to coach every position instead of delegating it to his position coaches.

He was nuts at the time. He had a big ego and had the mentality of a bar room baller. The players were probably scared shitless of him at ole miss.

It was ole Miss pre-big money recruits under Freeze.

Coach O has always been known as a very good recruiter. As I recall, he recruited good talent to Ole Miss. Cutcliffe left the cupboard pretty bare for Coach O. Coach Nutt won immediately w/ Coach O's players, but ala his experience at AR, he could not maintain a winning program.

Coach Cutcliffe
2004 4-7, his last season.

Coach O
2005 3-8
2006 4–8
2007 3–9

Coach Nutt
2008 9–4
2009 9–4
2010 4–8
2011 2–10

He impressed me by saying he was aware of what his mistakes were as a head coach. Simply put he basically recognized he didn't relinquish control to those that were more knowledgeable. A problem that has plagued lsu for quite some time. I think Coach O will give it a solid run.

He was super hard on some of the players.

He basically said that today. You can't coach your whole team like your DL.

I remember when LSU played OM when he was coaching there and Ethan Flatt threw a pick and CEO basically shite down his throat. Got in his face, chewed his arse out.
I think Flatt was more rattled with what Orgeron told him than the LSU Defense.

Sorry, but you're just flat wrong. At least in the past 8 seasons BDP has not won the national special teams coach of the year award. Maybe you were thinking of 2010 when LSU's Joe Robinson won the award.

2015 Special Teams Coordinator of the Year award-Sean Snyder, Kansas State University.
Previous winners of the Special Teams Coordinator of the Year award are James Shibest (Ole Miss, 2008), Mike Tolleson (Texas, 2009), Joe Robinson (LSU, 2010), John Baxter (USC, 2011), D.J. Durkin (Florida, 2012), Jeff Ulbrich (UCLA, 2013) and Robby Discher (Oklahoma State, 2014).

& is one of our better recruiters.
I hear that all the time. My opinion is that he's such a liability coaching special teams that I'd be willing to take a chance w/ someone else doing his coaching AND recruiting.

According to himself, it was that he tried to micromanage instead of letting his coaches coach. A pretty common mistake in football and in the work world period.

I believe it was John Maxwell who said he attributes most of his success to surrounding himself with top shelf talent and then letting them shine.
