He was an awesome defensive back as well. Did some kicking too.

The 100 yd. dash speed is believable...the 40 yd. is preposterous.

Billy & Trindon aren't the only fast Tigers.
Al Coffee, a Lee High Baton Rouge graduate, turned out 9.4s 100yd dash times regularly in the mid-60s at Lee, and the late 60s-early 70s at LSU. Cholly Mac didn't know what to do with him either. He also turned out 6.2s 60m and 20.9s 200m. Al was closer to Billy's size than Trindon's, and he had good hands.
That being said FB game speed, including directional adjustments, is a bit different than straight-line on a track.

That from Wikipedia. Not 3.9

Billy Cannon was my orthodontist in my teens. I asked him about the old AFL and some players I remembered in my youth. Once I asked him about Lance Alworth. I remember Alworth running away from just about everyone when he caught a pass and he was a 9.6 sprinter in high school. Well Billy told me that Lance wasn't all that fast but he could jump like a deer and could time his leap just right to be the one to catch the ball instead of the defensive backs. So to Billy Cannon, Alworth wasn't all that fast. I would say that no way Cannon could run a 3.9 forty but he was in the 9.3-9.4 range for 100 yards definitely.

Billy Cannon is one of those rare athletes who would still be considered an elite player 50 years after his prime. I cannot accept a 3.9/40 time but the speed he did possess would still be considered blistering even by today's standards. In the best possible way, this guy was a freak.

quote:Not true. Trinton is faster. Trinton ran 10 flat in the 100 meters. Cannon ran 9.4 for 100 yards.
He would have left Trindon in the dust. That should tell you all you need to know.
At that time, the world record for the 100 yard dash was 9.3. Cannon won the SEC 100 yard dash, AND the shotput. He was truly an exceptional athlete.

I happened to watch a documentary about the old AFL.
I couldn't believe that NO MENTION of the original N01 pick of BOTH leagues signing with the Houston Oilers as the Heisman Trophy winner.
They spent a lot of time showing "Broadway" Joe Namath, where he played in college, his panty hose commercials, his white fur coat, his white cleats, his late night bar hopping, yada, yada.

1958 was my freshman year at LSU, I went to LSU track meets all the time. I saw him run a 9.4 (wind aided) at LSU. He regularly ran 9.5 hundred yard dashes. Bobby Morrow of Abeline Christian College Texas was the Olympic champion 100 (meters). He ran 9.3 hundred yard dashes in America at the same time as Billy Cannon was running track. I met Billy Cannon at the LSU track because my room mates father was the head of the LSU Chemistry Dept. and as many of you know Billy Cannon was a Doctor of Dentisty, a pretty smart guy!

He was a great athlete for his time, but I doubt very seriously he ran a 3.9 40.
If he was clocked at that time it was because the person started the watch late or stopped it early.

you missed the one that had alot about Cannon in it then.
The thing that I found most interesting was how people who were around the AFL in the early 60's credited Cannon with being "the man" with the early AFL stuff. Viewers from around the country were "familiar" with Billy Cannon and helped the AFL gain viewers/fans and credibility. His signing with Houston was the AFL's first big "get" and he did get alot of credit for it in the first AFL special that aired on Showtime.
I doubt if there has been another LSU football player that had his name recognition nationally like Cannon. remember this was way before espn and such, yet kids from around the country KNEW who Billy Cannon was and followed him to the AFL as fans
