Pistol Pete Maravich....
Shaq even said he was!
Xavier Carter is still the fastest football player ever!
Do y'all remember him taking a knee on the one yard line after fielding a kickoff?
Home game I think against Miissippi State

Didn't say it didn't require skills. A fairly unique combination.
Just not as athletic an endeavor as anything requiring running, jumping or throwing - the traditional athletic disciplines.

Yes, he certainly did win the Masters at age 46 (I think), which, along with Boros' US Open, illustrates the point that golfers can compete at ages after other athletes break down.
However, although Nicklaus was the greatest of all time through his day, and will probably have the greatest record of all time (Woods is probably too injured to make it), nobody thought he was the best in the world in that year, before or after his Masters win. He was the best for four days. So was Jack Fleck.
And you first said "ISN'T an athletic competition." So, which is it?

This thread will not settle anything, but those not old enough to be aware of Cannon's abilities owe it to your Tiger fandom to get educated.
Set aside the legal troubles and look at his accomplishments.
Heisman winner, All American in football.
Played offense AND defense at a very high level.
Punted and place kicked.
Returned punts and KOs
Ran the 100 at world class level
Threw the shot at SEC champ level.
Probably would have won the Decathalon if he had competed in the Olympics.

I didn't get to see Casanova play football. My vote is for Shaq. He's the most dominant center in the NBA, ever.
Tyrann Matthieu also gets an honorable mention. I wish we could've seen Chad Jones play baseball longer than we did. It was an honor to watch him play for LSU.

Shaq said he was the best basketball player. Huge difference. I'm a big Pistol Pete fan, he was athletic , but what set him apart was unworldly skill, not super physical athletic ability. Sorry, he's not in the conversation on this issue, even though he was the best basketball player ever period imho.

Todd Kinchen was a freak athlete
We played him in some 8 1/2 goal tournaments and it was sick how that dude could leap.

I always love these arguments when people can't even agree what "athletic ability" even means

quote:Chas was more known for what he did on the mound in '09 season as far as I'm concerned. I was in the RF side bleachers when they brought him in the very first time. I said WTF are they doing, the rest is golden. Had no idea the dreadlocks of Doom could throw BBs.
Chad jones.
"Put an athletic baseball player in any sport and he'll do well. Put any other athlete in front of a 95mph fastball and he will fail".
Saying that these sorts of lists will always be difficult because of your taste for competition. Do you like track instead of baseball? What your idea of talent.
Both Cannon and Casanova were freak athletes. Both 10.2-3 100 meter guys. Fournette is about as fast. Fournette wasn't as quick as Casanova and he didn't throw a shot. So I'll take both of them over him.
Casanova was 6'2@205. He wasn't a small db.
Trindon is one of my personal favorites because he was world class track fast and played football at his size in the pros.
You can't knock Cannon was all State in football, basketball and track. He threw passes, kicked FG, extra points, played defense. Dude was an animal.

Chad Jones was a really good athlete but not the best athlete ever at LSU. I would put Odell B above Chad Jones...

The most athletic guy I ever saw in person at LSU was Maurice Williamson
