I am surprised by so little love for Shaq. When he was in young, he was just an athletic freak. That size, speed, quickness.

BTW, did you see him compete against all of those world-class athlete's in Shaq Vs.?

You guys do know that our two time all American crnerback who is second at LSU in interceptions, who started his LSU career as a WR, was a better basketball player in high school. State champions and player of the year, in basketball and football.

It ain't Pat Pete.

I witnessed 6'0" Corey Webster do a 360 and a windmill against my high school team. He was on another level on both the football field and basketball court.

In terms of best overall athlete against their competition, it is Billy Cannon and there is no real argument for anyone else

Heisman trophy winner in football

All American in track and set lsu's 100 yard record that stood for 4 years

All American in field where he set an lsu record in shot put

Johnny Robinson, great RB never talked about because of Billy, hell of a tennis player, and went on to switch positions in the NFL only to have one of the greatest careers a free safety has ever had. It's a travesty that he isn't in the HOF. Look up his career stats.

And you first said "ISN'T an athletic competition." So, which is it?

It isn't. I stand by it. It's a physical activity that requires a unique combination of skills. To be outstanding doesn't require any particular "athletic" gift. Nothing about playing golf (however well) is "athletic."

Bowling either. Billiards either. Chess either. Doesn't mean I can hang with nationally ranked guys in those activities.

Probably would have won the Decathalon if he had competed in the Olympics.

Tap the brakes - he was a great all around athlete and the track coach famously said, "If he lost 10 pounds he could win the Olympic 100. If he gained 10 pounds, he could win the Olympic shot put." But, I'm not sure he would have been able to score enough points in the javelin, the jumps or even the 1500.

When I think of "athleticism" I usually think of speed, quickness, strength, leaping ability (vertical), long jump, and the like. But I would also include reflexes and hand-eye coordination in some measure.

Before my time, but from what others have shown, Billy Cannon makes a strong case. Few others, that I think are in this conversation:
LaRon Landry
OBJ
Chad Jones (he looked so fluid playing whatever)
PP

I know I'm overlooking some. It's amazing how many great athletes we get to see play as Tiger fans.

He's flirted with the idea of switching to soccer because football was "not fun anymore".

If he's as good as people hype him up to be he could prob make more money playing In Europe, based on international popularity.

put the shot 56' when 60 was world record.

I used to point out that Cannon was either the fastest shot-putter or the strongest dash-man in history.

He was a freak. Cassanova was in the same mold.
