LSU’s forgettable 19-14 season left the Tigers well shy of an NCAA Tournament bid, and has also dented Simmons’ value in the eyes of Nike and Adidas

quote:

Industry insiders have previously estimated Simmons could demand a shoe contract worth between $50 million and $100 million. However, DePaula says Simmons’ struggles at LSU have taken the shine off his image as basketball’s next superstar.

He told The Vertical Podcast with Woj that Simmons’ expected sneaker deal could be worth as little as $12 million
.

quote:

DePaula said Simmons was in a stronger position for contract negotiations before he stepped in the door at LSU.

quote:

“I think it’s totally fair to frame it that way,” he said. “I think if you look maybe a year before he went to LSU, he was the guy. He was tabbed as the next guy for sure.

quote:

"The other element that’s tough right now as it stands is that he’s trying to get the deal done before the draft, so it’s not going to affect which market it ends up being drafted to. He’s just having Nike and Adidas right now going head to head in negotiations. I don’t know if he has enough leverage to pull off the deal that he was originally hoping for.”

The Rantards are going to pile on Simmons on here I'm sure, but this is terrible for LSU Basketball, no matter how you slice it.

It's 100 mill rumor floated everywhere while he's still in school then as soon as he declares its 12mill.

Wish I had this problem. Oh you're only going to get 12 million.

Same thing happened with Andrew Wiggins. Jahlil Okafor. Its the college game thats killing the hype, not LSU.

I must have missed the part of the season when he wasn't averaging 20-12-5.

Good for Ben, say screw Nike and go under armour. That's where all the champs are anyway.

If that is his highest offer, he damn sure will.

I don't think it will be but he isn't getting $100M either.

Simmons was never getting a $100M. The guy is a good player but not nearly as good as he was hyped up to be

Maybe, just maybe, Ben and or his advisers would have thought about controlling the hype and focused on team chemistry and making a deep run in the ncaam bball tourney which may, just may, have justified the hype and resulting big shoe contract...

Even if that is true, don't think for a second that other coaches aren't going to tell superstar players to avoid LSU and Jones at all costs because all he did was devalue Simmons' potential worth and marketability at the next level.

While it isn't Jones' fault that NBA-ready HS players have to go to college for one season, at least Kansas and Duke can say to those guys "if you have to go to college for one year, at least come to a place where you will be in the college basketball spotlight. Don't go to somewhere like LSU and play for Jones where the ONLY sure thing that will happen is that you will see your overall stock decrease."

I know all the Jones fan-boys love to tell the other 98% of LSU basketball fans they are wrong about Jones, but the fact remains that he had his one big shot to truly change the direction of the program this past season and he completely crashed and burned. It's is going to be extremely hard to recover from that negative stigma.

you conveniently left out a big part of the story:

DePaula believes Simmons also has some personal traits that would make Nike and Adidas nervous about offering a monster deal.

There’s just stretches of indifference for him,” he said. “I think if you’re a brand, that’s a red flag you’re nervous about. A guy that’s going to be engaged at all times and also a guy that’s going to be excited to promote and talk about the brand that he’s partnering with, or is he going to be someone who goes through the motions at times.

It's got nothing to do with LSU. He just gained more exposure this year and was, for the first time in many years, not playing with a stacked deck. Every team in America that Ben has ever played for was loaded and more talented than 95% of his opponents. It was like Ben playing for the NBA West All Stars against the Philadelphia 76ers.

If Ben's market value took a hit, it's not because of LSU. It's because the entire nation saw his effort on the floor and lack of willingness to compete for victory.

In other words, step up in the spot light and lead rather than shun the spot light and become an non factor, as we have all witnessed in big games this season...

No. I didn't conveniently leave it out. It's frowned on to cut and paste an entire article so I just took a couple of snippets out of it.

The link is there for you to read the entire thing if you want to do that.
