Bob Brodhead resigned in October of 1986, effective Dec 1. Bill Arnsparger resigns Dec 6 1986. Mike Archer hired in December, before the Jan 1, 1987 Sugar Bowl. Joe Dean was hired in April of 1987.

Now that you say all of that it does have a familiar ring to it.

I was a student then and I remember that Arnsparger was involved in finding his replacement. I've always thought that was strange, but with all the dates you quoted, it makes a little more since now.

" your memories of that era"

Grandpa coached his final season at LSU with the Fla. AD gig firmly hidden away in his back pocket.

Not to hijack an Arnsparger thread, but I saw the Bo Rein story for the first time yesterday. Man, what a human tragedy. And from a football perspective that guy seemed ready for greatness. What LSU would have become under Rein during the '80s will forever be a painful mystery.

Look at the kids Arnsparget signed and the kids Stovall signed and you'll see Arnsparget did as well or better than Stovall did if you look at top 7 round NFL drafted kids per class.

On the other hand Archer was horrible.

Boosters had to twist Arnsparger's arm to hire Spurrier.Anyone who thinks in 1986 Arnsparger had a grand plan to hire Spurrier THREE years later is an idiot.

Couple of things about arnsparger's last year, he and broadhead were on the outs bc of each other's ego. Also, Arnsparger was tired of the good ole boy system and the politics within the university. This is the main reason he left. When Saban and emeritt got here they put a stop to the good ole boy system and I think we have enjoyed the resultsfrom this. I was in the locker room after the Tulane game when he told the team he was leaving. My dad was on the staff then. This caught everyone by surprise. He did recommend archer but it was bc he was trying to help out one of his coaches. Also the team did want archer. Spurrier wasn't hired at Florida until 89. 2 years after Arnsparger had left. Archer's problem was that he wasn't ready and there were internal issues within his staff. And yes there were a lot of issues. The staff didn't respect archer and resented him. From a coaching stand point, Arnsparger was just as good as Saban, in my opinion, but he didn't enjoy recruiting. Half of his staff went on to coach in the pros.

Yes, he did bring the 1986 title.

and last for 13 more

That one (1988) was Archer's title.

He was a total a hole

He wasn't an "a hole," but he didn't have great people skills exactly. Everyone has forgiven Saban for not having people skills, so they should forgive Arnie too.

If he was so "tired," how was he able to come out of retirement to coach the San Diego Chargers' defense to the Super Bowl?

Arnsparger was a heckuva coach and he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Everybody's bringing up his bowl record but Nebraska was just a better team than us in those Sugar Bowls. The Liberty Bowl against Baylor was a stinker but I still say that Arnsparger was the 2nd best on the field coach LSU has had since Dietzel left....behind only Saban.

The events in line of order

Bob Broadhead was into LSU as AD in 1981

Bob hired near all the who's who of LSU coaching in the off sports at the time, Skip, Henry, Sue, etc.

At the end of the 1983 season Bob has to fire Stovall and hire Bill.

Bob is on the outside looking in at that time, as he is not part of the good ole boys network.

Bill retires as football coach and to become the AD at Florida in late 1986.

Bob is forced out at LSU in Oct. 1986, and Joe Dean replaced him.

LSU lines up many candidates, names like Steve Spurrier, Mike Shanahan, and Mack Brown (who wanted the job very bad). brown was never in the races as he was know as a snake oil salesman. the team and most of the fans wanted Archer. Steve had not been a head coach on the college level yet, he would start coaching Duke in 1987.

Joe becomes the Ad in April 1987 if I remember correct.

Galen Hall is Florida's coach until the season of 1989 when he is replaced during the season by Gary Darnell. Galen got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and was canned fast.

Steve is hired to replace Galen and Gary for the 1990 season.

Bill never really want to be a head coach in college football. He wanted the team to come out level for games, never trying to pump them up for the big games. He hated to recruit.

top 5 rankings

We never finished in the top 5 under Arnsparger. We might have been ranked in the top 5 at some point during one of his seasons, but I'm not sure. If any, it would likely have been 1984 when we started 5-0-1 before a loss to Notre Dame. His other seasons, we had early losses that likely would have kept us from getting into the top 5. Highest finish in the final rankings was 10th, I think.

You were right, were 7 before that ND loss and ended in top 20, then reached #5 after 86 season and debacle to Nebraska; ended at #10.
As I said before, we could never quite get that elite status although were some good wins and fun at times!

All the recent chatter here about Curley got me thinking about the 3 Arnsparger years (84-86). Two Sugar Bowls, top 5 rankings, but he gets little notice among LSU fans.
In general, fans don't remember someone who only coached three years unless he was really bad.

I was a student at LSU during this time. Archer was getting a lot of play in the media as a great young coach. This was before 24-7 coverage so maybe the reporting was biased. It all felt good, we commoners just knew that Bill had saved our program after the Rein tragedy, installed the next great young coach and then he had gone home to retire. None of that held true.

The SEC emerged in the 90's as the dominant conference and our program floundered while the schools in the East dominated. The gumps got one under a short-timer in 92 but Saban had everything to do with elevating our program before he left. It was not Bill's fault it took so long and he sure as heck had no idea that Spurrier's offense would be revolutionary.
