All the recent chatter here about Curley got me thinking about the 3 Arnsparger years (84-86). Two Sugar Bowls, top 5 rankings, but he gets little notice among LSU fans.

Your memories of that era?

Arnsparger could have gotten Saban to replace him

I remember those teams well. They were very good on defense and had some of my all time favorite players on them. Dalton Hilliard, Tommy Hodson, Michael Brooks, Eric Andolsek, Eric Martin, and others. The Arnsparger years turned out many NFL players.

I don't know if it's true, but I've always heard that when arnsparger left to be the athletic director at Florida, he hand-picked Archer as his successor.

So aside from the short tenure, a lot of people don't like him because of that. I blame that on, I think it was Brodhead, that allowed it to happen. A guy going to another sec school to be atletic director picks our football coach? Idiotic

Or was Joe Dean before Broadhead? I think it Broadhead first and then Joe Dean.

The team wanted Archer as well, IIRC.

Of course, there's no way that letting the team pick the coach could backfire.

Arnsparger retired. Interviewed a few people for head coaching job, including a young Duke head coach Steve Spurrier.

He recommended Archer.

In less than a year, Arnsparger unretired as UF AD.

His first act as UF AD was to hire Spurrier.

This has been said and posted so much that it has become accepted as fact, but it's simply not true.

Per Wiki:
quote:

Shortly after the final regular season game in 1986, Arnsparger announced he was resigning to become the athletic director at the University of Florida.

quote:

On January 1, 1990, Spurrier returned to the University of Florida to become the Gators' head coach.

Arnsparger was a great football coach. he was pretty old and "tired" and didn't want to coach any longer so he made his play to be the AD. wrong school; in those days ex HC's were NOT going to be hired as AD's. in fact, Skip is the only ex coach we've had.

as great of a coach as he was he was not a genial guy nor was he a proponent of bowls. he viewed bowl games as a reward for the players and coaches and basically didn't work hard to prepare for them. I remember the Hall of Fame bowl in Tampa when we played Syracuse, which was a triple option team at the time. Arnsparger, an ex pro coach, had no idea how to defend that kind of offense and man did it show. we had great athletes and that's the only reason Syracuse didn't score 50 on us.

Remember as some really good teams, players and games. fun times; just never quite break into the elite status even with #5 rank because of the bowl games. i.e.; Huskers "bringing the wood" to Sugar Bowl!
Some of games recall: his debut the tough 24 all tie @ UF, his debut in TS a 27-26 squeaker over a good AZ team, 2 good W over gumps, the ugly (Ronnie Lewis)Tie 85 Ugh, fun W over Irish 86, grudge match W over Irish @ ND 85, romps over Greenies, J Bond-Yuk, TAM 86 opener, a few good ones w OM-except 86 stinker, and the SB both sucked, but still good times!

Wasn't that fiasco after with Archer 88 team? I believe so. Although your right Arnie was shite in bowls- the 2 SB and terrible miserable loss to Baylor 85! He was of the Saban or worse personality mold too!

This is how I remember it. There was no delay between him resigning at LSU and becoming UFs AD, and Spurrier definitely wasn't hired immediately after Arnsparger got to UF.

I was in school during that time and believe he ruined our program regardless of the 2 sugar bowls and the freaking losses to Tuland and MoO. He sucked in bowl games and allowed us to hire Archer knowing he would hire a new coach at UF.
