That Hall of Fame bowl fiasco vs. Syracuse was the responsibility of Mike Archer, not Arnsparger.

Those great Tigers were all recruited by Jerry Stovall.

85-tie Bama

That '85 game vs. Bama could have been one of the most frustrating games in LSU football history. LSU dominated the game but couldn't pull away at any time. There was a key fumble by Garry James when it looked like the Tigers would go up 2 scores, and Bama converted a long 4th down play with less than 2 minutes to go, the distance of which can only be described in light years.

Then Ronnie Lewis misfired on a game winning FG on the last play. I remember thinking it was good, but the official thought otherwise.

This. I was watching from the opposite end zone and started celebrating after Lewis kicked it. Don't know how he missed cuz it was only about 25 yards away. Lewis was so close he could have popped one of his zits and split the uprights with pimple pus.

Yeah I recall having a real meltdown after this fiasco! Wasn't that the RW "finger" salute?!
Although the 98 debacle was a close runner up!
But enough of this

Bob Broadhead was gone by the time Arnsparger left.

It amazes me how people don't get their facts straight. Arnsparger resigned after LSu beat Tulane in 1986. In less than a week, he was named the new Athletic Director at Florida. He did no retire a year later. He stayed for about 5 years. He hired Steve Spurrier in 1990.

Again, totally inaccurate. LSu interviewed more than 3 coaches. They interviewed Spurrier, but they also interviewed Sam Rutigiano, Ed Zaunbracher, Pete Jenkins, George Gardner, Mike Shanahan, Nelson Stokely, Lynn Amedee, among others along with Archer

More inaccuracies. Joe Dean was not even the Athletic Director when Archer was hired. Larry Jones was Interim AD at the time when Archer was named coach. Jones and James Wharton hired Archer. Joe Dean was named AD in the spring of 1987.

Finally, Bill Arnsparger did not hand pick Archer as his successor. He recommended him, but that is not hand picking. The players wanted him and LSU was SEC Champions, so it looked like the prudent thing to do. He didn't work out and neither did Hillman after him, but Hallman came highly recommended. He had just had a season at USM that included wins over Florida State and Alabama

Your memories of that era?

Great defensive coach

Loved his comments " we held them scoreless " however the team had a field goal.

When questioned he said he did not count field goals

His teams were like Miles' teams. Great defense with an offense that wasn't too exciting to watch.

Think he did that during the 1986 Miami Ohio game. In response to one of the other posts, I have the 85 Bama game recorded and have watched the kick many times. Very hard to tell if it was good from the replays as they only showed it from the "behind the kicker" view and obviously before HDTV. It was also before the goal posts were extended (i think anyway, they look short to me) so I'm not sure any other replays would have suggested otherwise. Seem to remember Arnsparger catching a lot of flak for not attempting to run to the middle of the field to set up the kick. Especially for a kicker that finished 5-17 in FGs that year.

'85 game vs. Alabama.

I watched the whole game on YouTube again yesterday.

The outcome of this game was determined with about 6 minutes to go in the game. LSU got the ball back after a Bama missed FG, and the score was still 14-7.

LSU ran on the first play, a four yard gain. LSU was running the ball effectively and could have maintained possession for probably the remainder of the game.

For some reason the Tigers abandoned the running game and started a bizarre passing attack which stopped the clock.

Something that I did not see mentioned was that Arnsbarger originally interviewed for the UF AD job during preseason practice in August. Then he keep everybody guessing what he would do until after the season was over. During his post game interview after the Tulane game he announced he was leaving.
Then the team, led by Tommy Hodson, showed up at the BOS meeting saying they wanted Archer hired.
It was at that point the BOS should have told the players "thanks for coming, but we will handle the job search". Turned out to be a serious case of the tail wagging the dog .
As a previous poster mentioned, it wasn't until Emmert took charge of the hiring of DiNardo's replacement that things changed.
After the Miles/November situation last year, it made me think that things were going back to how they used to be.
