He sucked in bowl games and allowed us to hire Archer knowing he would hire a new coach at UF.
Two things:

Archer was an awful hire with the benefit of hindsight. But at the time, it wasn't that much of a stretch.

Arnsparger did not have a pending head football coach hire on his plate when he took over as UF AD. Galen Hall was doing a helluva job under some severe scholarship restrictions resulting from the Pell years. Hall was quite safe when Arnsparger took over. He didn't run into trouble until 1989.

He was the only good coach we had from the 1980s until Saban. Great coach, in fact.

Great coach. Put us back in the top ten discussion for awhile. He was rolling in the recruits when he left.

No, the LSU football team hand-picked Archer.

Or was Joe Dean before Broadhead? I think it Broadhead first and then Joe Dean.

It was Joe Dean that hired Archer on advice from Arnsparger.

Bob Broadhead proceeded Joe Dean and brought Arnsparger in in.

Another poster said Joe Dean could have hired Saban to replace Arnsparger, but that's wrong, it was Spurrier that he could have hired.(he wanted the job badly).

It's kinda funny that Arnsparger advised Joe Dean to hire Archer and then he becomes AD at Florida and hires Spurrier.

My memories of that era 1: Left to be AD at Fla.
2. won SEC by beating MSU in Jackson
3. recommended his replacement who was a bust

Yeah, um...actually it wasn't funny. I was a student at LSU during the Archer and Hallman tenures, so just no...

Arnsparger won with Jerry Stovall's recruits. He didn't recruit much and didn't leave Archer much. As a coach, he was great, but not a recruiter.

Bob Brodhead resigned in October of 1986, effective Dec 1.
Bill Arnsparger resigns Dec 6 1986.
Mike Archer hired in December, before the Jan 1, 1987 Sugar Bowl.
Joe Dean was hired in April of 1987.

There was no permanent athletic director in place when Archer was hired in December of 1986. That was part of the problem.

Was a student worker at alumni center where the interviews were held. Sam Retiglino(sp) was interviewed for the archer hire. With archers first team stacked, it was as much keeping the entire staff. Part of archers problem beside attrition of players was attrition of coaches. He couldn't replace them with the same quality as a legend from the pros.

He won with Stovall's incredible talent. Pete Jenkins and Jerry Stovall put up a fence around this state and recruited NOLA better than anyone until Frank came aboard.
If Stovall could've stayed on to recruit and Arnsparger coach, Curly may never have happened. Arnsparger was no recruiter, but Harvey Williams came partly due to Mrs Arnsparger.

Rutigliano was still coaching the Browns when Stovall got fired so I doubt he interviewed after '83 season. Rutigliano coached the Browns until he was fired with a 1-7 record in '84 and Cleveland promoted defensive coordinator Marty Schottenheimer to succeed him.

I think Rutigliano interviewed or at least expressed interest in '87.

There was good and bad, but like so many things, people tend to forget the bad. He brought some stability and won our first sec title in 16 years and last for 13 more...but as good as we were at times we choked so bad at others. He was a total a hole with the only person being a bigger a hole being his wife...recruiting was not gray as others have said, but the guy knew football and after 7-4, 3-8, 8-2-1 and 4-7 (including 0-6 in sec which was our first winless sec season ever and we were the LAST team to earn this low) ... Terrible in bowl games, home losses to unranked ole miss and a bad notre dame, Miami Ohio, bad losses...but overall a solid 3 years
