How long before Mcneese has a better team than LSU? I say by year 2 if Wade goes there.

BR is an awesome place to live, but WW lives in TN now.

Even though he went about it the wrong way, I think WW proved you can get big time players to LSU basketball and possibly compete for a title. He himself said when hired he thought of LSU as a sleeping giant.

With all this behind them I believe LSU can pull in a big time coach.

You make a lot of good points, but it seems like LSU already tried your option 1 with McMahon. I suppose they try it again in the hopes that they are more successful.

Whatever you want to call Woodward, he is a very good AD who has made solid hires and given more time and less of a cloud, could get a better BB coach. I agree that LSU is a much better designation for FB than BB but he may be able to identify a strong candidate with some sort of LSU connection.

I don't see LSU going option 3 but I could be wrong.

Wade should go to UL-Carencro. What a shite show that would be. Remember Sunbelt Billy was a lock to be LSUs head football coach

The potential to pull big time talent to LSU has always been there...well before Wade. But the question is if you are, say Scott Drew for example, why would you leave Baylor, where you are perennially in the hunt for a championship to come "restart" at LSU. I'm sure the response would be "a big salary". However, I'm sure Baylor is willing to pay him very well to remain their coach.

It is VERY unlikely LSU would be able to poach a championship caliber coach from a championship caliber program. LSU's program is not in the stratosphere to do such a thing and it doesn't happen all that often in college basketball. That's fine. Very few of even the top programs find their coach that way. Basically, if you aren't Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas, UCLA, it's hard to do. Just look at the current top 10:

1. Houston - hired Kelvin Sampson at the conclusion of his show cause penalty
2. Alabama - hired Nate Oats from Buffalo
3. Kansas - poached Bill Self from Illinois
4. UCLA - poached Mick Cronin from Cincinnati
5. Purdue - Matt Painter was Purdue alum who was brought in from Southern Illinois to be the coach in waiting
6. Marquette - Hired Shaka Smart who was getting out of Texas before they fired him.
7. Baylor - hired Scott Drew from Valparaiso
8. Arizona - Hired Tommy Lloyd who was an assistant at Gonzaga for 20 years
9. Texas - (currently has an interim) hired Texas alum, Chris Beard, from Texas Tech
10. Gonzaga - Mark Few was promoted from within when Dan Monson left for Minnesota

To expect LSU to poach a big name coach from a big name school is foolish. This isn't football or baseball. It's going to take either hitting on the right mid-major HC (always a crapshoot) or getting a big name on the unpredictable occasion he becomes available.

That's why I sound like a broken record banging the Chris Beard drum. This is one of those unexpected occasions where a big name coach IS available and you could legitimately have a shot to get him...if you wanted him. LSU is unlikely to ever win a "beauty contest" against Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc. But if none of those schools are in the race, LSU is certainly as attractive, if not more, than just about every other school in major conf. basketball that might be in the marketplace. Yes, there is risk involved. But do you think No. 1 Houston is glad they took a risk in hiring Kelvin Sampson? Fortune favors the bold.

McMahon ought to hire Trent Johnson and Jones as assistant coaches. That would be the trifecta of the worst coaches for men's basketball at lsu in the past 50 years.

You may be on to something! Perhaps they could combine their powers like Voltron to form a super coach!

Jones's recruiting
Trent's defense
McMahon's....(I'm sure we could find something)

The only concern is would the team fall asleep from boredom watching passion in which these three displayed on the sidelines?

That's how most major conf. coaches are hired in college basketball. It's how Wade was hired. And it's likely the approach LSU would take the next time around....unless

I don't think they do either. But if Wooward's MO is hiring the best "name" available, then option 3 is the most likely avenue for great success. It has simply been proven time and time again.

Pearl got fired from Tennessee for lying to the NCAA resulting in a show cause. Auburn hired him to great success. Texas eventually got tired of Barnes failing to meet expectations. Tennessee hired him and has been a very good program. Kelvin Sampson got a show cause after getting in trouble at two schools. Houston hired him and is currently the No. 1 team in the country. Cal got in trouble at UMass. He eventually resurfaced at Memphis and was playing in Final Fours. He then got in trouble at Memphis. That didn't bother Kentucky. Eddie Sutton landed Kentucky on probation. Oklahoma St. hired him and had great success (for them). Since you seem to be a Michigan guy, Steve Fisher unceremoniously forced out at Michigan. He made San Diego St. a perennial NCAAT team. Arizona fired Sean Miller amidst the same scandal/investigation involving Wade. He's taking Xavier to the NCAA Tournament this season for the first time in 6 years. Rick Pitino was finally forced out of Louisville for multiple misdeeds. He'll likely take Iona to its second NCAAT in 3 years this season.

These names are "names" because they know how to win. If you have moral misgivings about hiring such guys, so be it. Far be it from me to tell you how to feel. But mining the mid-major ranks for a HC is a 50/50 shot, at best. For every Nate Oats there are 5 Kermit Davis's, Stan Heath's, Johnny Jones's, etc. If you want to win, the surest way to do so is to get a guy that has shown he knows how.
