I'm going to answer your question like this..
Bama was after him hard as well at the end of his recruitment and he chose to come here.
2 of the top 10 teams in the country wanted him bad.

Eta: i mean, most on this board seem to measure our success by bama so there it is.

I've been saying this all offseason but the reason Sci wasn't a 4 or 5 star is because he lacked the eye popping athleticism that all of the scouts base all of their ratings and rankings on.

Sci is the most refined and technically sound pass rusher I've seen as of recent coming out of high school. He has a nasty arsenal of moves that Orgeron will build on. Don't be surprised to see him in pass rushing situations and mauling SEC tackles. He's Arden Key with less length but doesn't have the weight problems that Key has.

I rather judge off of a kids offer list vs stars,

Couple of things to look at:

- As you wrote, offer list. This is the best indicator.
- If LSU was the only big time school offering, how early in the process was it? If early, and especially if it was a camp offer, guy could still be a great recruit and not have a great offer list.

You could also interpret this as with him being such a dominant force off the edge, I doubt teams ran much to his side. IMO that explains the lack in tackles.
I'm going with this right here.

Oh, I love the month before the season

But against th run and diagnosing plays he is a 2 star.

That's bullshite, he's good at diagnosing plays, getting of blocks and making the tackle.

61 total tackles with 33 of the, being on sacks tells you what you need to know.

Actually most teams they played run plays from shotgun in spread offenses. So that's a big part of his numbers.

Wasn't just the recruiting services that ranked him low but the coaching staff as well were very late with an offer to him and it was just when other recruits fell through around signing day that he received an LSU offer.

What was the knock on him to rate him where they did?

sometime coaching staffs and recruiting services are off on their evaluations. It happens all the time. That's why 3 stars and late offers often times end up in the NFL. Remember Tyronne Mathews.

Gary Patterson wanted him pretty bad at TCU, that tells me all I need to know

So the fact that les miles and his recruiting staff wanted him don't mean anything?

Nah, he earned an offer at camp and was pressed to commit, but chose to wait. The coaches kept recruiting him and won him in the end.

Not really, Orgeron wanted him the entire time and it was only until Aranda was hired where Orgeron got his way thankfully. The kid is going to be a monster in this defense.

Thanks for the history lesson. You apparently do not know what a committable offer is.

Everything in that post is true jackass, look it up.

why did they back off of him and re offer him around signing day after others fell through? You seem to be an insider, was it Aranda that had to take a closer look and be convinced?

Orgeron wanted him the entire time, once again, Aranda being hired with Orgeron's backing got him here.

Let me get this straight...you want us to remember the player whose name you couldn't remember. Ok, gotcha.

Needs to add more bulk (207 lbs on a 6'4" frame) 4.87 time in the 40. Plus it's a very competitive position. Great up side.

Tyronne Mathews, aka 'the honey badger', the CB who played for LSU a few years ago was also a late addition the team and flew under the radar for much of his recruitment cycle. Turned out to be a really good player at LSU and in the NFL.

At The Opening regional (or whatever it was called then) the summer before his junior year, these were his numbers:

Sci Martin DL 2016 LA McDonogh 35
6-3.5 207
4.87 40
4.44 shuttle
39 Powerball
29.5 Vertical
86.97 SPARQ Rating

Tall but not heavy and did not run a great 40. Maybe measuring out like this at whatever camps he attended contributed. If he is 240 now, obviously that makes a big difference, particularly if he kept or improved upon that speed.
