Why was Sci Martin only a 3 star?

Stars mean nothing with respect to performance, but they do tell you where the services rank someone in comparison to their peers. In the 24/7 composite he was ranked as the 34th WDE, nothing to sneeze at, but he seems to pass the eye test and had one of the most productive seasons by a D lineman in the history of LA HS football. Is he not a workout warrior? What was the knock on him to rate him where they did?

He had a ton of sacks but not a ton of other production overall. Could be a 1 trick pony basically. He actually had more sacks than he did just other tackles (61 total tackles, of which 33.5 were sacks).

Not a big issue IMO, Tim Williams for Alabama might be the same way. He hasn't had to play every down there (just pin his ears back and rush the QB) and Martin wont be doing that either here (At least for the next 2 seasons with Key here).

Martin could be a pretty big asset in a few years with his pass rush ability. Biggest thing for him will be learning technique on the other non pass-rushing downs.

he is a Tim Williams type. But as you can see Timmy has been pretty darn good for Bama.

I rather judge off of a kids offer list vs stars, and if you look at Sci offer list it rivals that of a high 4 star player.

He really seems to be a great fit in Aranda's scheme too. We shall see sooner rather than later with Isaiah's injury most likely.

Gary Patterson wanted him pretty bad at TCU, that tells me all I need to know.

This is a good metric to use IMO as well for 3-stars we grab. Some will have weaker offer lists than others. For instance it's criminal to me a guy like Neil Farrell is barely a Top 500 player. In the few months leading up to him committing to us, he received offers from Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida State and Minnesota. Doesnt sound like an offer list a guy barely cracking the Top 500 would have. But then a guy like Seth Stewart's only other offers were West Virginia, Pitt, Louisville and Marshall and understand why he's a low 3-star (NOT ragging on him, just showing a difference in offer lists).

Definitely the most anticipated 3 star commitment watch in TD history!

As a pass rusher, Sci is a 5 star. But against th run and diagnosing plays he is a 2 star. 61 total tackles with 33 of the, being on sacks tells you what you need to know. His overall rating as a high end 3 star cuts the difference, but I will say he has the athleticism and upside to be a great all around player at the college level and. Or just and edge rushing specialist

I just don't get what all the negative fuss is over a guy who got 33.5 sacks out of his 61 total tackles?? It seems evident that he is a pass rushing specialist (Heck a sack Wizard) and was used to pin his ears back and get to the QB. What in the hell you guys want? Would you prefer he had 84 tackles and 10 sacks?

Sack is better than a tackle. If he is rushing the QB it would be hard for him to slide over and make plays out of his gap responsibility. And maybe teams ran away from him or right at him since he was exploding off the line like a rocket. His coach gave him the green light to explode off the line and kudos for him to being a sack master!

Maybe his HS coach used him as just a pass rushing specialist. With the spreads in HS these days it could make sense to have one guy you just tell to go hard after the QB every single down.

Just spitballing here though.

Nobody is negatively fussing. Just giving plausible explanations to the OP on his question of why Martin was only a 3-star recruit. A good answer is he's a great pass rush specialist but isn't a complete player considering he had 61 tackles of which the majority were sacks. Myles Garrett is also a great pass rush specialist but struggles against the run (I realize he was a 5-star, but he wasn't expected to struggle against the run like he has).

Can certainly use a guy like that at Buck OLB. Alabama used Tim Williams in almost exclusively pass rush situations last season.

You could also interpret this as with him being such a dominant force off the edge, I doubt teams ran much to his side. IMO that explains the lack in tackles.

61 total tackles is actually good for a DE at any level. Sack numbers almost unbelievable. My guess is he blew up his last year in HS and didn't play the "camp" game. This possibly limited his rating and perhaps reconciles his offer list vs that rating.

question... does he get "sacks" when the QB is running, not trying to throw it, but he gets tackled for a loss?

sometimes the statkeepers at NOLA public schools misapply the definition of certain stats (like the baseball kids who get "hits" when other schools commit errors)

Yes but again, 33.5 of those were sacks. So yes, ELITE pass rusher, but that leaves just 27.5 tackles on ball carriers that isn't the QB behind the LOS (About 2 a game his senior year, they played 14 games). That's the point being made here is while his sack numbers are ridiculous there's potential questions around how good of an overall player is he which is why he may be a 3-star and not a 4 or 5-star.

I have to go back, but I dont think this was an issue. Pretty sure he went to one of the regional opening camps (New Orleans?) and a few other camps.
