Coaches probably don't think the in-state guys will commit to LSU with our current situation like it is so they are going after other guys. Looking at his offer sheet it's not like it's a bad prospect.

Other way around.

It takes a lot more effort to get an OOS player to come here.

There is no risk associated with offering OOS recruits. Most of the time it's a way to gauge interest. It let's the recruit know that the school is interested and by the response given by the recruit, it'll determine if he'll continue to be recruited and evaluated or not. No harm, no foul.

Whereas, if the coaches give an instate offer this early, they better be absolutely sure about the prospect. Otherwise, they face damaging the relationship with the high school coaching staff which is why there are so few Louisiana players with LSU offers. Those seven have attended LSU camps (with the possible exception of Simon) and have been evaluated in person by LSU coaches at one point or another. The are aware of their abilities (academically and athletically) and personalities.

He just saw it was an out of state player without a star ranking. That kid can definately sling it. Over 2/3 of his passes were for more than 30 yards it seemed. Puts good zip on the short throws and good touch on his deep throws. Has the wheels to run, evades and rolls out to create plays, but stays behind the line in order to pass first. Lots of potential in this kid. Im sure he will grade high once someone properly evaluates him.

u know that was a pretty good evluation.

you didnt use any of the cliche` terms that i cant stand

Say what you will but the pass at .55 is one of the hardest for a QB to make and he did it very well. Looks good to me!

he does have a live arm

I like that he is always looking down the field in his video... most 17yos who have the open field like he had would tuck in run it if the immediate pass option was not there...this kid sticks with the pass and checks down to find WRs down field instead of running it

mechanics need a lot of work

ESPN EVAL (espn 150) 4* on Scout. #13 QB on Scout

This kid looks like a high school version of Jason Campbell. Similar build, measurables, arm strength and the throwing mechanics are uncanny. Obviously he isn't quite as developed. Scroggins can really hum it and possesses a powerful downfield arm. He is a pocket passer with good overall athleticism and the ability to buy second passing chances. He is very consistent and smooth in his overall methods. Drop speed and set is excellent. He is a very balanced passer in the pocket. Shows a calm demeanor and appears to be in control of this scheme. Has displayed the ability to make all the throws with authority and confidence and is an accurate passer capable of fitting the ball into tight spots in the short and intermediate passing game. When his feet are set he can hit the skinny post, seam route and deep out with ease and poise. Works through progressions and you don't see him force the football very much. Takes what the defense gives him and isn't afraid to check down underneath or tuck the ball and get what he can with his legs. Has very good feet to sidestep the rush, avoid pressure and keep his eyes downfield. Has flashed the ability to accurately deliver the ball with people in his face. Delivery mechanics are smooth and over-the-top. Can get rid of the ball quickly and with pop. Shows velocity and ball speed especially on underneath-to-intermediate throws. Displays touch and timing on deep throws and fade routes. Throws well on the move and is capable of improvising and making things happen on the move. Overall, Scroggins is an impressive guy that is only going to get better with added experience. Has the upside to be one of the better QB's to come out of this class. He can really throw the football, but isn't a one-dimensional pocket passer.
Notes

2008: Threw for 2,556 yards and 24 touchdowns. League offensive MVP. All-CIF recognition... Also recruited by: Oregon State, Colorado, Washington State, SMU...

All 4 of the QBs on our roster are FR or SO. Unless they are just awesome, I don't see any reason to sign a QB this class.

I agree with you but the coaches seem pretty certain that they want another QB. I wouldn't mind one more in case J. Lee transfers and Shep gets moved elswhere. And, if we take one more, I love this kid.

Not a big fan of history are you. Well last year we had 4 QB and the 4th string ended up as the starter. Unlikely to happen again but, never say never. This year we have 4 unproven QBs all with a ton of potential. I would agree its not a priority but it wouldnt hurt to take 1 QB this year. Here's some reasonable scenarios Jefferson starts and goes Pro Jr. year, Lee transfers, Shep either switches position or goes pro his Jr. year. That leaves Garret. What if he doesnt pan out or transfers. Lots of what ifs but not unreasonable.

I get what your saying, but taking a QB wouldnt be the worst idea.

Did we sign 2 QBs in RP's class?

So 4 should be enough, then, no?

I didn't say never sign another QB ever again, just not this year unless there is one that is just too good to pass on. If we sign 1 this year, then another next year, we'll have 6 QBs on scholarship. That's too many.

we might not have signed 2 this year. Like they've said, Shep may never end up a fulltime QB, Lee probably has a high probability of transferring in the next year or two, JJ could go pro in two years. So unless you think Chris Garrett is the be-all and is indestructable we need to get another QB. If Les can find the room to waste multiple schollies in one class on kickers and a deep snapper than we can scrounge up a QB scholly amongst our 25.

I see both points of view about QBs in this year's class. If we can get a top QB this year, that's great. I don't think it's a position of necessity, so there isn't a reason to sign someone who the coaches don't completely like.

However, there is one thing I know for certain. We should definitely sign a homegrown 2-star player for our secondary.

If the coaches didnt want a QB, then they wouldnt have offered anyone this year. Obviously they want another QB. Its not the highest of priorities, but we will sign one anyway if we can. Maybe the coaches know a little more about the college game. Better safe than sorry.
